Fish the Seychelles

Remote outer-atoll flats fishing at Providence Atoll with Blue Safari.

The pinnacle of saltwater fly fishing

The remote outer atolls of the Seychelles are where saltwater fly fishing reaches its highest form, and Providence Atoll is the wildest of them all. Through our partner Blue Safari Seychelles you fish it by liveaboard expedition aboard the Mayas Dugong, wading roughly 345 square kilometers of untouched flats for giant trevally, bonefish, permit, triggerfish, milkfish, and the prized bumphead parrotfish, with sailfish and yellowfin tuna offshore. Rod numbers are tiny, the fishery is vast, and if you dream about it in saltwater, it swims here.

These are technical, demanding fisheries best suited to experienced saltwater anglers who are comfortable wading and casting in wind. Guides will help capable casters step up to GTs, triggerfish, and permit.

The outer-atoll season runs roughly October to mid-December and late January through April, closing over the Indian Ocean winter trade winds. Prime weeks sell out well in advance, so plan a year or more ahead.

You fly into Mahe (SEZ), the international hub of the Seychelles, then connect by charter flight to the outer islands to board the expedition vessel. Note strict charter luggage limits and use soft duffels.

A 9-weight for bonefish, a 10-weight for permit and triggerfish, and an 11 to 12-weight with a strong reel and 500 yards of backing for GTs. A full gear and fly list is provided when you book.

The Mayas Dugong carries seven guest cabins with air-conditioned dining and lounge spaces and a large upper deck. It is a comfortable, self-contained expedition, and you should plan to be off-grid for the week.
