Nymph-Head Flies Quick Picks
- Best All-Around: Nymph-Head Heavy Metal Tungsten Beads - The bead for tiers who want maximum weight and a buggier shape than a plain round bead. Molded pupils give any nymph a head, in sizes from 3/32 to 3/16 inch.
- Best Budget Bead: Nymph-Head FlyColor Brass Beads - Anodized, countersunk brass beads in natural and attractor colors. Use them for a slower sink in shallow riffles or on a dropper under a dry.
- Best Finished Nymph: Nymph-Head Heavy Metal Pheasant Tail Fly - A tungsten-weighted Pheasant Tail in sizes 12 through 20 that gets down without split shot.
- Best for Stoneflies: Nymph-Head Evolution Stonefly Fly - A Prince-style stonefly in sizes 6 through 10 with the anatomically molded Evolution Stonefly beadhead. Built for broken water and deep runs.
- Best Kit: Nymph-Head Evolution Stonefly Prince Nymph Fly Tying Kit - Everything to tie eight Stonefly Prince Nymphs, including the Evolution tungsten beadheads and step-by-step instructions.
How to Choose Nymph-Head Flies
Tungsten or brass: match the bead to the water
Action: Reach for Nymph-Head Heavy Metal Tungsten Beads for Euro rigs, deep tailwaters, and anywhere you would otherwise add shot. Tungsten sinks far faster than brass at the same size, which lets you keep the fly slim.
Action: Reach for Nymph-Head FlyColor Brass Beads for flies that should drift in the top half of the column, for dry-dropper droppers, and for stillwater nymphs under an indicator.
Tip: Color does work. The bead colors match naturals or add a hot spot without a collar of thread.
Evolution beadheads: shaped heads for specific insects
Best for: Stonefly patterns, the Evolution Stonefly head on the Nymph-Head Evolution Stonefly Prince Fly, which has the broad, flat profile of a real stonefly nymph rather than a round bead in front of a stonefly body.
Best for: Mayfly nymphs, the Nymph-Head Evolution Mayfly Clinger Fly for riffle-dwelling clingers and the Nymph-Head Evolution Mayfly Swimmer Fly for the slimmer, active swimmers.
Best for: Caddis hatches, the Nymph-Head Evolution Caddis Pupa Fly in cream, green, and grey, sizes 14 to 18.
Build a Heavy Metal box that covers a season
Action: Start with the general attractors and searchers: the Nymph-Head Heavy Metal Hares Ear Fly in 12 to 20 and the Nymph-Head Heavy Metal Copper Fly in four wire colors.
Action: Add hatch-specific flies next: the Nymph-Head Heavy Metal Caddis Larva Fly with its latex body for caddis water, and the Nymph-Head Heavy Metal WD-40 Fly in 18 and 20 for tailwater midges and Blue-Winged Olives.
Why Trident Carries Nymph-Head
Nymph-Head is Flymen Fishing Company’s nymph line, and it brought two useful ideas to the bead bin: tungsten beads with molded eyes that make a plain nymph look like an insect, and Evolution beadheads shaped like the actual heads of stoneflies, mayflies, and caddis pupae. We carry the beads, the finished flies tied on them, and the kits in one collection.
Materials & Durability
- Match the bead hole to the hook: Tungsten is hard and will not stretch over a thick eye. Check the hook wire against the bead size before you tie a dozen.
- Lock the bead in place: Build a small thread dam or a few wraps of lead-free wire behind the bead so it cannot slide back and loosen the body.
- Protect the finish: Anodized and painted beads chip when flies bounce off rocks together in a box. Give tungsten flies their own row.
- Latex and shaped heads need care: The latex body on the Caddis Larva and the molded Evolution heads hold up in the water but can be crushed by forceps. Unhook from the bend, not the head.

Nymph-Head Flies FAQs
Q: What are Nymph-Head beads?
A: They are fly tying beads from Flymen Fishing Company that add weight and a head profile to nymphs. The Heavy Metal line is tungsten with molded pupils, the FlyColor line is anodized brass, and the Evolution line is tungsten molded into the head shape of a stonefly, mayfly, or caddis.
Q: Are Nymph-Head Heavy Metal beads tungsten or brass?
A: Heavy Metal beads are tungsten, which is why they are among the heaviest beads for their size. The FlyColor beads are the brass option.
Q: What size Nymph-Head bead do I need for a size 14 nymph?
A: Most tiers use a 1/8 inch bead on a size 12 or 14 standard nymph hook and drop to 3/32 inch for 16 and 18. Both lines offer those sizes.
Q: Do the Nymph-Head Evolution flies actually look different in the water?
A: The shaped head changes the silhouette, especially on stonefly and clinger patterns where a round bead looks out of place.
Q: Are Nymph-Head finished flies tied on barbless hooks?
A: The listings here do not specify barb style for each pattern, so check the product page for the fly you want and pinch barbs where regulations require it.
Q: Which Nymph-Head flies work for Euro nymphing?
A: The heaviest options are the Heavy Metal Stonefly, Copper, and Hares Ear patterns and the Evolution Stonefly, all with tungsten heads. Pair them with a lighter FlyColor dropper above to cover two depths.
