Shop bonefish fly reels: corrosion-resistant reels with smooth drags and plenty of backing for screaming runs across the flats.

Bonefish Fly Reels Quick Picks

  • Best Premium Bonefish Reel: Hatch Iconic Large Arbor Fly Reel - A carbon-filled drag with outstanding stopping power and a smooth feel, wrapped in an open frame that dries quickly after a day of wading. The large arbor spool picks up line fast when a bonefish turns and runs back at you.

  • Best Lightweight Reel for All-Day Casting: Hardy Zane Carbon Fly Reel - Hardy's hybrid carbon fiber and aluminum frame cuts weight without giving up rigidity, and the fully sealed saltwater drag keeps sand and salt out. A great match for a light, fast 8wt you'll be casting from sunup to the afternoon wind.

  • Best Value Bonefish Reel: Echo Bravo Fly Reel - A sealed, waterproof, saltwater-safe drag in a simple, lightweight package. No bells and whistles, which is exactly why it is popular with anglers heading out on their first bonefish trip.

  • Best for Fast Line Pickup: Lamson Litespeed M Fly Reel - Designed around retrieve rate per ounce, the Litespeed M is light in hand but gathers line in a hurry. A marine-specific hybrid drag and IPX8 waterproof protection make it a natural fit for fast-moving flats species.

How to Choose Bonefish Fly Reels

A Sealed, Smooth Drag

A hooked bonefish often takes off on a long, fast run of 100 yards or more, and the drag has to feed line evenly the whole way. What matters most is smoothness and low startup inertia, not huge maximum drag numbers - bonefish leaders usually run 10-16 lb, and a sticky drag that jerks at the start of a run is what breaks fish off. A sealed drag is the standard for flats fishing because you will dunk the reel while wading, set it down on a sandy skiff deck, and get it splashed on every run across open water.

Backing Capacity and Arbor Size

Plan on 150-200+ yards of backing behind your fly line. Most days a bonefish won't take it all, but a big fish on an open flat, or one that heads for the reef edge, can get deep into your backing quickly. A large arbor spool helps twice: it holds more backing in a compact frame, and it retrieves more line per turn when the fish changes direction and swims toward you, which is when bonefish most often come unbuttoned.

Size and Line Weight

An 8wt is the most common bonefish setup, with 7wt outfits popular for calm days and smaller fish and 9wt rods for windy conditions or bigger fish. Choose the reel size that matches your rod's line weight, such as a 7/9 or 8/10 model for an 8wt. Sizing up one step is a reasonable choice if you want extra backing room for trophy fish, as long as the outfit still feels balanced.

Weight and Balance on the Flats

Bonefishing means a lot of false casting, stripping and standing on the bow or wading with the rod ready. A reel that balances your rod near the front of the grip makes those long days easier on your wrist. Lightweight designs like the Hardy Zane Carbon and Lamson Litespeed M pair well with modern fast-action 8wt rods, while heavier, more robust frames trade a few ounces for extra durability.

On-the-Flats Tips

  • Set your drag before you see fish: Pull line off the reel and set the drag light enough that a running fish won't snap your tippet. You can always add pressure later in the fight.

  • Clear your line on the strike: Most lost bonefish happen in the first few seconds, when loose line wraps a reel handle or your feet. Keep your hand off the handle and let the reel spin until the fish is on the reel.

  • Keep your rod tip high: On flats with coral, mangroves or turtle grass, a high rod tip keeps your line up off the bottom during long runs.

  • Rinse every evening: Rinse the reel with fresh water after each day, back the drag off, and let the spool and frame dry separately before packing it away.

Complete Your Setup

  • Bonefish Fly Rods - Fast-action rods in the 7-9wt range for accurate casts in the wind.

  • Bonefish Flies - Shrimp and crab patterns in the weights and colors bonefish eat.

  • Fly Line Backing - Fill your spool so a long run never becomes a lost fish.

  • Fly Fishing Leaders - Tapered leaders that turn over flies gently for spooky fish.

Bonefish Fly Reels FAQs

Q: What size reel do I need for bonefish?

A: Match the reel to your rod. Most bonefish anglers fish an 8wt, so a reel sized for 7-9wt or 8-10wt lines is the usual choice. Make sure it holds your fly line plus at least 150 yards of backing.

Q: Do I need a sealed drag for bonefish?

A: It's strongly recommended. Bonefish reels get dunked while wading and exposed to sand, salt and spray every day. A sealed drag keeps grit and salt out of the drag surfaces and needs far less maintenance than an open drag in the salt.

Q: How much drag do I need for bonefish?

A: Less than most people think. You'll fight bonefish with light to moderate drag settings, so a smooth, consistent drag that starts without a jerk matters more than a high maximum drag rating.

Q: Can I use my bonefish reel for other species?

A: Yes. A good 8wt saltwater reel also works well for redfish, snook, juvenile tarpon and striped bass, and many anglers use the same reel for carp or bass in fresh water.
