The Mako Model 9550 Inshore Fly Reel is the size most anglers land on when they buy into the Mako platform. Rated for 9 to 11 weight lines and holding better than 300 yards of backing behind a WF9, it covers the whole middle of serious saltwater fly fishing: tarpon, permit, roosterfish, big jacks and striped bass. Everything Mako is known for is here without compromise, a fully sealed carbon fiber drag, a calibrated one-turn-stop knob, a taper lock quick-change spool and a three ball bearing spindle assembly, all machined to aerospace tolerances and hand calibrated before it ships. This is a reel bought once and fished for decades, and it is priced accordingly. If you fish salt often enough that a drag failure would cost you a fish you have been chasing for years, this is the argument for spending the money.
Ported Frame at 4.5 Inches - The 9550 runs a 4.5 inch frame diameter over a 4 inch spool with a 1.2 inch width, and the frame is ported throughout to keep the weight of a solid machined reel in check. At 13.8 ounces it is not a light reel and was never meant to be, but it balances a 10 or 11 weight rod properly and puts real mass behind a fish that is running. The porting also lets backing dry between sessions rather than sitting soaked against solid metal.
Large Calibrated One-Turn-Stop Knob - The full drag range lives inside a single rotation of an oversized indexed knob with a true one-turn stop. That is the practical difference between this reel and most sealed drags: you can go from free spool to full setting in one motion, without counting turns or hunting for the stop, while a fish is already burning backing. The knob is calibrated at the factory so the index marks correspond to real, repeatable pressure rather than being decorative.
Taper Lock Quick-Change Spool - Spools change on a taper lock system rather than a threaded cap, and the spool rides on a three ball bearing spindle assembly. Both choices are about longevity in salt: there are no small threaded parts to drop over the gunwale during a spool swap, and the taper lock does not develop play between spool and frame after a few seasons of hard fish the way a worn thread will.
Type III and Enhanced Type II Anodizing - Mako specifies Type III hard anodizing on its black reels, which drives a near ceramic hardness into the surface of the aluminum instead of laying a coating on top of it, and Enhanced Type II anodizing for its color finishes. That is the specification that matters on a reel expected to live in salt spray, get dragged across a skiff deck and go months between deep cleanings. All three are matte rather than gloss, which is the right call on a flats reel where a bright reel face is one more thing flashing at a fish in two feet of water.
Fully Machined Aluminum - Frame and spool are machined aluminum, produced to what Mako describes as the highest machining standards and level of polish, then hand assembled and individually calibrated before the reel leaves the shop. Machining rather than casting is what allows the tolerances this reel depends on, since a sealed drag only stays sealed if the housing and lip seals meet within a very narrow band, and a quick-change spool only stays free of play if spool and spindle are cut to match.
Type - A fully sealed multidisc full-contact carbon fiber drag using Mako's button technology, which is aimed directly at start-up friction. The spool begins turning the instant a fish pulls rather than jolting against a stack that has set while the reel sat, and that first instant is where class tippet and hook holds are lost. Maximum drag on this platform measures 15 to 17 pounds in the 9550, which is more pressure than most anglers will ever dial in and enough to turn a tarpon or lean on a giant trevally over structure. The setting you dial holds through a long run instead of fading as the stack heats, and the clicker gives a clean mechanical note in both directions at a medium pitch, sharp enough to hear without carrying across the flat.
Materials - Carbon fiber discs run inside a housing sealed by o-rings and proprietary carbon impregnated Teflon lip seals. Sealing is the entire point of a reel in this category: salt, sand and grit never reach the drag stack, so the pressure you calibrated in year one behaves the same in year ten without the reel being opened. Carbon fiber is the correct disc material here because it sheds the heat a long run generates without losing consistency as it warms, which is exactly what cork and many synthetic stacks fail to do.
Large Arbor - The 9550 is a large arbor reel, with a 2.65 inch arbor inside a 4 inch spool, which works out to roughly 9.62 inches of line pickup per turn at the arbor. That is not the fastest retrieve rate in the saltwater market, but it is more than adequate, and the large arbor matters more for how it stacks line than for raw speed: backing lies flat under load instead of digging into itself, and a fly line that has been out to the backing does not come back with memory coiled into it. Mako rates the 9550 for 300 to 355 yards of 50 to 60 pound braid alongside a WF9, and recommends 50 to 60 pound GSP braid as the backing. Capacity scales through the range: the 9500 takes 230 to 300 yards of 50 pound braid with a WF7, the 9600 takes 330 to 440 yards of 60 to 80 pound braid with a WF10, and the 9700 takes 410 yards and up of 100 pound braid with a WF12.
Mako Lifetime Warranty - As of August 2026, Mako warrants its reels to be free of manufacturing defects and covers repair or replacement of manufacturer defects for the lifetime of the original owner. The warranty does not cover direct, indirect, consequential, incidental or any other damage resulting from use of the reel, and any modification that alters the reel's calibrated settings can void coverage, so drag work goes back to Mako rather than to an outside bench. Register the reel with Mako after purchase and route service requests to them directly.

"The reel was begrudgingly returned for refund. The drag on Makos currently being produced are scratchy sounding, not what I expected from a Mako, not like any of the other/older Mako reels that I own, not how I believe a premium fly reel should sound, and would yield a far less satisfactory fishing experience than what I have come to expect when fishing with Makos."
