Description

Orvis Battenkill Click Fly Reel is a proven legend in the click-and-pawl reel world, built for anglers who prefer the hands-on thrill of palming a running fish rather than relying on a mechanical drag system. A click-and-pawl reel that has been offered in various forms since the 1960s, the Battenkill Click combines decades of heritage with modern refinements that make it smoother, more comfortable, and better looking than ever. This reel is designed for anglers who want an affordable, lightweight click-and-pawl reel for any type of fly fishing where an adjustable drag is not required. Most commonly associated with small-stream trout fishing, click-and-pawls can actually be used for a wide variety of species, ranging from bass and bluegill to carp and even bonefish. Whether you are a beginner building your first trout setup or a seasoned angler looking for a simple, reliable companion for your favorite creek rod, the Battenkill Click delivers classic performance at a price that competes well above its weight class.

Design

Both models of reel are fully machined, and the Battenkill Click features a standard arbor with a ported design that pays homage to Battenkill reels of old. The circular porting on the spool helps dry the line and the backing while keeping weight to a minimum. The team worked to tighten tolerances for even smoother operation and updated design features, including improved hand feel, a curved reelfoot that won't kink leaders when you store your rod fully rigged. Its open-cage design doesn't feature an adjustment knob on the outside, giving the reel a clean, uncluttered look. An exposed palming rim on the spool lets you apply additional pressure by hand when a fish makes a strong run. The spool is easy to remove, there is a spool release latch at the centre of the spool, making line changes and maintenance quick and simple. Switching from left- to right-hand retrieve is simple, so the reel works for any angler right out of the box. Available in three sizes, the Battenkill Click I is 2.8" in diameter for 1-3wt rods, the Click II is 3" for 3-5wt rods, and the Click III is 3.25" for 5-7wt rods.

Finish

The Battenkill Click features anodized aluminum for extra durability and corrosion protection. The anodized nickel can withstand drops, bangs against trees, drops on pavement, and various other mishaps. New understated colors complement the aesthetic of Superfine®, Classic Bamboo, or even freshwater Helios™ and Recon® rods. The new silver and bronze colors look fantastic, giving the reel a refined, heritage-inspired appearance. The laser-engraved logos are also a nice feature, adding a subtle touch of detail. This is a reel built primarily for freshwater use. If you plan to fish near salt, be sure to rinse it thoroughly after each session to maintain the finish over time.

Materials

Constructed from 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, this reel offers exceptional strength and durability while maintaining a lightweight profile for effortless handling. The Battenkill is made with machined, heavy-duty bar stock aluminum. This means the frame and spool are precision-carved from a solid billet rather than cast in a mold, resulting in tighter tolerances, greater impact resistance, and a longer service life. The internal components are bronze and stainless steel. The heavy-duty internal components keep the reel functioning for many seasons. The handle is crafted from Delrin®, a tough engineering-grade polymer that provides a comfortable, ergonomic grip without adding unnecessary weight. The reel handle is made of composite plastic, and that's the only plastic component on it. The result is a reel that weighs between 3.4 oz and 4.1 oz depending on size, making it one of the lightest options in its price range.

Drag

Type: Embracing a classic click-and-pawl mechanism, the Battenkill Click provides anglers with direct control over line tension, delivering an authentic and responsive fishing experience. The drag system adjusts internally with four different positions, and works in tandem with the palming rim on the spool. There is no external drag knob. To change the drag setting, you remove the spool and rotate the adjusting block inside the frame. This keeps the exterior clean and simple. The click-and-pawl provides just enough resistance to prevent spool overrun when stripping line, while the real stopping power comes from your palm on the exposed rim.

Materials: The internal components are bronze and stainless steel. These materials resist corrosion and wear, keeping the pawl and ratchet mechanism smooth and consistent over years of use. The result is a very audible click on both incoming and outgoing line that is satisfying on the water and functional for letting you know when a fish is taking line.

Arbor Size

Standard arbor with a ported design. Unlike large-arbor reels that prioritize fast line pickup, the Battenkill Click uses a traditional standard arbor that stays true to classic click-and-pawl reel proportions. The benefit of the narrow spool is that you get reduced line stacking for a better experience out on the water. While line retrieval speed is slower compared to large-arbor designs, this reel is purpose-built for freshwater situations where quick pickup is rarely critical. The standard arbor also contributes to the reel's compact, lightweight profile, which is ideal for balancing light rods in the 1-7wt range.

Warranty

Your reel is unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship. Damaged reels can be repaired on an individual basis and Orvis also offers reel cleaning and conditioning. The warranty does not cover accidental breakage, excessive wear and tear, or breakage from abuse. This is a lifetime warranty for the original purchaser, giving you confidence that Orvis stands behind this reel for the long haul. If you ever need service, contact Orvis directly through their website or customer service line.
