Description

The Orvis Hydros II Euro is the European nymphing version of the Hydros, and unlike the past-season reels that used to share this page, it is a current model: Orvis carries this exact reel and color in its catalog today. It is built on the Hydros II size, for 3 to 5 weight lines, at 5.6 oz and 3.5 in. in diameter, and it makes the two changes euro anglers actually need. The frame is fully caged, with spool to frame tolerances tightened so the thin running line and mono rigs the technique lives on cannot slip between spool and frame. And it is deliberately a touch heavier than the standard Hydros II, because Orvis weighted it to balance the 10 and 11 foot rods that dominate euro nymphing.

Design

A full cage surrounds the spool, so there is no gap for a fine leader or level running line to work its way into, the failure that ends a euro drift faster than any missed strike. The drag knob is ergonomically positioned to be reached without taking your hand off the reel, the seal on the drag chamber protects the clutch bearing, and the reel foot is radiused for kink free leader protection. Orvis is explicit that the Euro carries the same attributes as the standard Hydros series; the cage and the tolerances are what set it apart.

Finish

Matte olive with silver accents, machined and then anodized. Anodizing is an integral surface conversion rather than a coating, so it does not chip off a rim or a foot the way paint does, and it stands up to the freshwater rinse Orvis asks for after heavy exposure to dirt and sand.

Materials

The frame and spool are precision machined and anodized from 6061 aircraft grade aluminum, the standard structural alloy for a reel that has to hold a spool true under load without carrying dead weight.

Drag

Type - The fully sealed Hydros disc drag with zero start up inertia. Start up inertia is the trait that matters most in this discipline: euro takes are detected on tight line and light tippet, and a drag that breaks away smoothly at the set pressure is what keeps a 6X tippet connected through the first surge. Because the chamber is sealed, the drag requires no maintenance and shrugs off the grit and silt of a season spent close to the riverbed.

Materials - Stacked carbon and stainless steel disc washers. Carbon against stainless gives a low, even coefficient of friction that does not spike when it is cold or wet, and the sealed chamber keeps the surfaces away from the grit that makes an open drag chatter.

Arbor Size

Large arbor. On a euro reel the layout earns its keep twice: wide coils of level running line come off without spiraling through the guides, and when a fish runs at you mid-drift, the fast pick up per handle turn is what gets you tight again before the hook works free.

Warranty

Every Hydros reel is unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship, and Orvis states that its reels are guaranteed for life against defects. Any breakage or malfunction its repair specialists judge to be a defect is fixed free of charge. Repairs and overhauls outside that are handled individually for a $30.00 handling fee plus the cost of any parts required, not to exceed $50.00 without prior approval, with a credit card taken before work begins. Terms are per the Orvis reel repair page as of August 2026 and are set by Orvis, not by us.

Item was processed and delivered

"Item was processed and delivered very quickly. This is my second Hydros V . It is very capable for big Albies in the Chatham rips. Plenty of drag, plenty of capacity, and although many advertise zero startup, this one actually delivers it."

Orvis Hydros Reel Review

"Very good reel...well machined, smooth running, adequate capacity. Expect to pass this one down to grandson"

Stanley M. (5/5)

Nice reel for the price

"This reel is a great value, it has a nice sound, and smooth drag. Saltwater reels tend to be quite expensive and the IV and V models of this reel are great for those not wanting to spend 500+ on one of the higher end saltwater reels. I am using the V on a 9 wt and like the way it balances/fells. My only complaint would be that the reel knob is a little cheap feeling but honestly that is a minor complaint and given the price - it is still a great reel."
