Ross Evolution FS Fly Reel

The Ross Evolution FS Fly Reel is built for the angler who wants one serious reel instead of three. FS stands for Fresh/Salt, and Ross designed it as the most robust reel in their lineup, capable of covering single hand and two-handed freshwater work as well as saltwater. The drag is the reason it exists: Ross hybridized the drag features of the Evolution LTX and the Animas into a stacked system built for a level of braking strength neither parent reel offers. Four sizes cover 4wt through 10wt, and every one of them is machined, anodized and assembled in Montrose, Colorado.

Design

The FS is machined around a symmetrical semi-caged frame, which is the structural difference between this reel and the rest of the Ross line. The stout, rounded radius frame adds durability and closes off the gap where line can slip between the spool and the frame, the failure that ruins a fish and often the fly line with it. The drag knob is sized to be easy to find by feel and simple to turn, and it is shaped so fly line will not catch on it when a fish leaves in a hurry. Ross paired that frame with a high capacity spool, and the reel is not shy about weight: the range runs 5.9 oz in the 4/5 up to 7.7 oz in the 9/10, heavier than the Evolution LTX or Evolution R at comparable sizes. That mass is what lets the FS balance a long two-handed rod rather than leaving the rig tip heavy.

Finish

Ross hard anodizes its reels in house in Montrose, in a zero discharge closed loop system that recycles and purifies its own water. Hard anodizing converts the surface of the aluminum into a corrosion resistant layer rather than laying a coating on top of it, so it does not chip off a palming rim the way paint does and it stands up to salt exposure provided you rinse the reel. The frame also carries machine engraved land and sea artwork, a direct reference to the fresh and salt brief. Standard colors are Matte Black, Matte Platinum, Matte Blue and Matte Olive, with additional fly shop exclusive finishes including Blackout, Mardi Gras, Matte Chocolate and Matte Merlot.

Materials

Frame and spool are CNC machined from aerospace grade 6061-T6 aluminum, from domestically sourced bar stock. Machining rather than casting is what holds the tight spool to frame tolerances that the semi-caged design depends on, and 6061-T6 takes an impact against a gunwale or a rock without deforming. The handle is machined from canvas micarta, a resin bonded canvas laminate. It weighs less than a metal knob and, more usefully, it gets grippier when your hands are wet, which is most of the time on a reel that sees surf and spey water.

Drag

Type - The FS uses a stacked drag system that combines what Ross liked about the Evolution LTX and the Animas drags, tuned for higher braking strength in both fresh and salt. It is not a sealed drag. Ross explicitly calls the Evolution R and R Salt fully sealed systems and does not make that claim for the FS, so treat this as a reel you rinse and dry after saltwater or alkali water, spool separated from frame.

Materials - Ross specifies high temperature resistant materials in the drag stack but does not publish which ones, and does not publish a maximum drag figure for the FS. What the material choice is for is heat: a stacked drag heats up as a strong fish burns line off the spool, and a stack that cannot shed or tolerate that heat fades partway through the run. The FS is engineered to hold its setting from the first turn to the last.

Arbor Size

This is a large arbor reel on a high capacity spool, and the diameters are generous: 3.514 inches at the 4/5, up to 4.554 inches at the 9/10. A large arbor recovers more line per turn of the handle, which matters when a fish runs at you and matters even more on the swing, where you are often managing a long belly and a lot of slack. It also stores fly line in wider coils, so the line comes off the reel with less memory and lies straighter on the first cast of a cold morning.

Warranty

The Evolution FS carries the Ross limited lifetime warranty, which covers the original owner only, is not transferable, and applies to reels bought from an authorized dealer. It is limited to repair or replacement of the reel. It does not cover normal wear and tear, fire, theft, loss or negligence, and intentional damage or misuse voids it. Ross charges a service fee on work sent to the factory, including covered warranty claims, and does not publish a flat rate for it. Claims go to the Montrose factory freight paid with a completed Product Service Form, and most reels are serviced and shipped back within four weeks of arrival. Terms as of August 2026.
