Shop redfish fly reels: corrosion-resistant reels with dependable drags for marshes, flats and inshore water.

Redfish Fly Reels Quick Picks

  • Best Premium Redfish Reel: Mako Model 9500 Inshore Fly Reel - Mako rates it for 7 to 9 weight lines and names redfish among its targets. It shares the fully sealed carbon fiber drag, one-turn-stop knob and quick-change spool of Mako's bigger reels, and it's built heavy and tough rather than light.

  • Best Reel for Bull Reds: Lamson Liquid Max Fly Reel - Lamson built the Liquid Max around its IPX8-certified waterproof Cobalt Drag, with smooth startup, big drag pressure and fast line pickup. It is built for big, stubborn fish, from bull reds in Louisiana to carp in fresh water.

  • Best All-Around Inshore Reel: Orvis Hydros Fly Reel - The updated Hydros adds an end-to-end sealed drag and a larger arbor to a reel anglers have trusted for years. Covering rod weights up to 9, it's an easy pick for an angler who fishes reds in the marsh and other species at home.

  • Best Dedicated Saltwater Reel: Sage Enforcer Fly Reel - Sage built the Enforcer with 50% more drag than the reel it replaces, plus more durability and improved sealing, with an easy single-turn drag. The 7/8 and 9/10 sizes cover everything from marsh reds to bull reds on open water.

How to Choose Redfish Fly Reels

Durability Over Capacity

Redfish rarely make the 100-yard runs that bonefish are famous for. Most fish are fought close, around oyster bars, grass edges and docks, so a redfish reel needs to be tough and dependable more than it needs a huge backing capacity. A sturdy frame, a drag that holds steady under pressure and a reel that can take a few bumps on a skiff or kayak will serve you better than the lightest reel on the wall.

Corrosion Resistance

Redfish water is often brackish, muddy and hot, and many anglers fish from kayaks or small skiffs where reels get splashed constantly. Choose a reel with a sealed drag, anodized aluminum construction and saltwater-safe hardware. These features keep salt, mud and sand out of the drag and slow down corrosion between trips.

Drag Strength for Bigger Fish

Slot reds in the marsh can be landed on light drag settings, but bull reds on open water or along the beach are a different story. If you plan to chase big fish, pick a reel with a strong, smooth drag that lets you put pressure on a fish and turn it away from structure. About 150 yards of backing is plenty for most redfish fishing, with more welcome if you target bull reds in open water.

Matching Your Rod

Most redfish anglers fish a 7wt to 9wt rod. An 8wt is the most versatile choice, a 7wt is fun for small marsh fish in calm conditions, and a 9wt helps with wind, larger flies and bull reds. Pick a reel sized for your rod's line weight so the outfit balances well during a day of blind casting and sight fishing.

Care & Maintenance

  • Rinse after every trip: Rinse your reel gently with fresh water, especially after fishing from a kayak or wading in muddy marsh water.

  • Remove the spool: Pull the spool and rinse around the frame and spindle where mud and salt tend to collect, then let both parts air dry.

  • Back off the drag: Store the reel with the drag loosened so the drag stays consistent over time.

  • Check your backing: Brackish water and sun wear out fly line and backing. Inspect both regularly and replace them when they look frayed or discolored.

Complete Your Setup

  • Redfish Fly Rods - Fast-action 7-9wt rods for quick, accurate shots at tailing and cruising reds.

  • Redfish Flies - Spoon flies, shrimp, crabs and baitfish patterns for marsh and flats fishing.

  • Fly Lines - Find a line with a taper that turns over redfish flies in the wind.

Redfish Fly Reels FAQs

Q: What size reel is best for redfish?

A: A reel sized for an 8wt is the most common choice. It handles marsh reds and bigger fish on the flats. Step up to a reel for a 9wt or 10wt if you mainly target bull reds.

Q: How much backing do I need for redfish?

A: Around 150 yards of backing is enough for most redfish fishing. Redfish fight hard but rarely run as far as bonefish or permit.

Q: Do I need a saltwater-specific reel for redfish?

A: A reel with a sealed drag and saltwater-safe finish is the best choice. Freshwater reels can work, but they need very careful rinsing and are more likely to corrode in brackish and salt water.

Q: Can I use the same reel for redfish and freshwater fishing?

A: Yes. Several reels in this collection, like the Lamson Liquid Max, are designed for both freshwater and saltwater, so the same reel can fish bass or carp at home and reds on the coast. Just rinse it well after every salt trip.
