Abaco Lodge

Description

Abaco Lodge is the only fly fishing lodge with direct access to the vast and legendary Marls of Abaco, a 250-square-mile maze of flats, mangroves, and lagoons creating the perfect habitat for bonefish. Rebuilt and reopened in 2023, the lodge offers an elevated experience for anglers, pairing world-class fishing with oceanfront rooms, great food, and an easygoing island vibe. With short runs to the flats, expert Bahamian guides, and cold drinks waiting on the dock after every session, Abaco Lodge is a place where serious fishing and laid-back living come together in one of the most productive bonefish habitats in the world.

Who It’s For

  • Bonefish anglers
  • First-time saltwater flats anglers
  • Families or groups
  • Couples who enjoy adventure and comfort

When To Go

The season at Abaco Lodge runs from October through July, with the best fishing typically falling between March and June. Spring brings warm, stable weather, light winds, and excellent visibility on the flats, making it ideal for spotting and stalking tailing bonefish. In the fall and early winter months (October through December), the weather can be slightly more variable, but the fish remain active and eager. As summer approaches, mornings stay productive, with calm water and happy fish. Heat and the potential for afternoon squalls increase slightly by June. Regardless of when you visit, the Marls offer consistent action with virtually no outside fishing pressure.

Bonefish

Bonefish are the main attraction at Abaco Lodge, and the Marls offer some of the best habitat for them in the Bahamas. This sprawling network of mangroves, flats, and creeks stretches more than 200 square miles, providing a massive, nutrient-rich ecosystem where bonefish thrive. Most fish average 2 to 4 pounds, with plenty of shots at larger singles and doubles in the 5- to 7-pound range. Anglers can expect steady action throughout the day, often seeing dozens of fish in a single session. Whether you’re a seasoned flats angler or new to saltwater, the combination of numbers, size, and forgiving conditions makes Abaco a dream destination for bonefish on the fly.

Permit

While bonefish are the main event at Abaco Lodge, permit offer a more elusive and rewarding challenge. The Marls don’t produce big numbers of permit like you might find in Mexico or Belize, but the fish here tend to be larger and often found trailing rays in slightly deeper water. Most shots come when conditions are calm and visibility is good, typically during the spring and fall. For confident anglers willing to put in the time and stay ready, Abaco can produce trophy-class Permit in the 35+ pound range.

Tarpon

While Abaco isn’t a major tarpon destination, there are still opportunities to target these fish at certain times of year. Juvenile tarpon in the 10 to 30 pound range can be found in sheltered creeks and backcountry channels, especially during the warmer months. Sight-fishing is the primary method, often involving short, quick shots at rolling or laid-up fish. These encounters are unpredictable but exciting, and they offer a fun change of pace for anglers focused on bonefish or permit.

Other Species

In addition to the main targets, Abaco’s flats are home to some exciting bonus species. Barracuda are the standout, often spotted in sandy channels or cruising the edges of flats, and they’re a thrill to chase with wire leaders and fast strips. Snappers and jacks show up from time to time as well, adding variety and a bit of chaos to the day. While not the primary focus, these species round out the experience and keep things interesting between bonefish, tarpon, or permit shots.

Boats

Abaco Lodge runs a fleet of Maverick Mirage HPX flats skiffs, designed specifically for stalking bonefish in ultra-shallow water. These skiffs are fast, quiet, and comfortable, featuring lean bars, cushioned seating, built-in coolers, and dry storage. Each is powered by a Yamaha 70HP four-stroke engine and rigged for two anglers plus a guide. Whether you're poling skinny mangrove edges or open sand flats, the boats are dialed for serious sight-fishing.

Equipment

A typical setup at Abaco Lodge includes an 8-weight rod and reel for bonefish, with a 10-weight on hand for permit, barracuda, and the occasional tarpon. Fast-action rods with tropical floating lines are ideal for making quick, accurate shots in the wind. While most anglers prefer to bring their own gear, the lodge has high-quality rods and reels available for rent if needed. Upon booking, Trident provides a full recommended gear list to help you pack with confidence.

FAQ

What skill level is required for this trip?

Abaco Lodge is a great fit for anglers of all experience levels. Beginners will appreciate the calm, shallow waters of the Marls and the lodge’s patient, experienced guides, while seasoned flats anglers will find plenty of technical challenges, especially when targeting bigger bonefish or pursuing permit. Whether you’re new to saltwater fly fishing or a seasoned veteran, the program can be tailored to match your comfort level and goals.

What should I do to prepare for a week of fly fishing in the Bahamas?

The most valuable thing you can do is practice your casting, especially in the wind. Focus on making accurate 40- to 60-foot casts with a quick pickup and minimal false casts. You don’t need to be a long-distance caster, but speed and accuracy make a big difference. Reviewing how to spot fish and strip set effectively is also helpful. Lastly, make sure you’re packed with the right gear and clothing. Upon booking, Trident will provide you with a detailed packing list to help you arrive ready for the flats.

Is Abaco Lodge Family Friendly?

Abaco Lodge is best suited for adult anglers or families with older teens who enjoy fishing-focused travel. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, but the program is built around full days on the flats with professional guides. Non-anglers are welcome, but there are limited structured activities for guests not fishing.

How many other anglers will be there?

Abaco Lodge hosts a maximum of ten anglers at a time. With just seven rooms and a small group of guests each week, the atmosphere stays personal and social. The limited capacity also ensures every guest gets ample attention from guides and staff.

How did Hurricane Dorian affect the fishery?

Hurricane Dorian caused major damage to Abaco Island and destroyed the original lodge in 2019. While the storm impacted the surrounding mangroves, the flats themselves remained healthy and resilient. Bonefish returned quickly, and today the fishery is thriving with minimal pressure and strong populations.

Is the water safe to drink?

Yes, the tap water at Abaco Lodge is safe to drink thanks to a reverse osmosis system. A variety of non-alcoholic drinks are also available at the open bar, including juice and sparkling water.

How does money work in the Bahamas?

The Bahamian dollar (BSD) is pegged to the U.S. dollar at a 1:1 ratio, and both are accepted interchangeably. U.S. dollars are widely used, so there’s no need to exchange currency. While credit cards are accepted in most places, we strongly recommend bringing cash for all gratuities and purchases at the lodge to ensure smooth transactions.

Do I need to bring my own fishing equipment?

You're welcome to bring your own gear, but the lodge also provides high-quality rental rods and reels if needed. Trident will send a complete recommended gear list after booking.

Can I bring a non-angling companion?

Yes, non-angling companions are welcome at Abaco Lodge. While the lodge is designed around fly fishing, it's also a comfortable and quiet place to relax. Non-anglers can enjoy time by the pool, use the small exercise room, or simply unwind with a book or a drink while others are on the water.

Do the guides speak English?

Yes, all of the guides at Abaco Lodge are Bahamian and fluent in English. They’re experienced professionals who know the Marls inside and out and are great at offering clear, helpful advice throughout the day.

Is traveling to the Bahamas safe?

Yes, traveling to the Bahamas is generally very safe, especially when visiting the Out Islands like Abaco. The lodge is located in a quiet, remote area where crime is virtually nonexistent. As with any international travel, it’s smart to take basic precautions, but guests at Abaco Lodge can expect a relaxed and worry-free environment throughout their stay.

What kind of electrical outlets are there?

Electrical outlets are the same as in the U.S. - 110 Volt AC power.

What is the weather like?

The weather in Abaco is typically warm and sunny, with daytime temperatures ranging from the high 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit. Breezes are common, especially in spring, which helps keep conditions comfortable. Occasional rain showers can pop up, but storms are usually brief and localized. Lightweight clothing, sun protection, and a good rain jacket are all essential for a week of fishing in the Bahamas.

Is tipping customary in the Bahamas?

Yes, tipping is customary and greatly appreciated by both guides and lodge staff. While the exact amounts are up to you, Trident will provide detailed tipping guidelines in your pre-trip materials to help you plan accordingly. We recommend bringing cash for all gratuities and in-lodge purchases.

What happens if I’m injured during the trip, and should I purchase travel insurance?

Medical emergencies and evacuations can happen in remote destinations, which is why we strongly recommend enrolling with Global Rescue before your trip. Global Rescue provides industry-leading medical and security evacuation services, and they also offer comprehensive travel insurance plans serviced through IMG. This all-in-one solution allows anglers to secure both emergency evacuation coverage and travel insurance through a single provider, helping ensure you’re protected if something unexpected occurs before or during your trip.
