Description
The Riversmith Duffel is a 45-liter waterproof duffel that goes from the raft to the airport without changing bags. It opens wide like a normal duffel with a zippered lid, and when the weather turns or the bag is going in the bottom of a boat, an internal roll-top seals the main compartment completely. Deployable backpack straps carry it on the trail, and removable side straps hold two rod tubes. Available in Shadow Kelp and Gray Cadmium.
How It Works
Day to day, the Duffel is a lightweight duffel with semi-rigid sides that hold it open for packing. Inside the lid opening is a roll-top collar. Roll it down out of the way and you have a quick-access duffel. Roll it up and clip it and the contents are waterproof, with the outer zipper and shell as a second layer. You pick the level of protection for the day.
Pockets that matter - A waterproof phone pocket, a microfiber-lined sunglass pouch, a document pocket and an ID, keys and phone pocket keep the small things out of the main compartment. Mesh pockets in the lid organize clothes.
Rod tube carry - Two removable straps hold rod tubes along the side of the bag, so a float trip's rods travel with the gear instead of loose in the raft.
Backpack straps - The straps stow away for the airport and deploy for a hike into a lake or a walk to the put-in.
Lockable zippers and molle - Lock the lid for travel, and use the external molle for a net or a water bottle on the river.

Why We Like It
Most waterproof duffels are a roll-top tube with handles, awkward to pack and impossible to find anything in. This one packs like luggage and seals like a dry bag only when you ask it to. At 45 liters it fits a raft, a drift boat and an airline overhead, and owners use it as a boat bag, a carry-on and a backpacking bag for waders in the same month. The internal roll-top does take some room when it is rolled down, so if you pack heavy, note that the 45 feels a touch smaller than the number.
