Description
Rio Saltwater Mono Tippet is built for the moments when a big saltwater fish turns and pulls hard, and you need your connection to hold. This is monofilament tippet made for tough water, tough structure, and fish that do not give you second chances.
Use it when you are building leaders or adding fresh tippet for flats and inshore species like bonefish, permit, snook, redfish, striped bass, and smaller tarpon. It shines anywhere abrasion is a real problem, like coral heads, oyster bars, mangrove roots, and barnacle-covered rocks, and it helps you stay connected instead of breaking off on the first rub.
Why We Like It
This tippet stands out because it balances strength, knot performance, and abrasion resistance without feeling overly stiff or wiry. That medium stiffness helps turn over common saltwater flies in wind while still letting your fly move naturally, and the clear finish keeps things subtle in a wide range of water colors. It is also a smart value for anglers who burn through tippet during long days on the flats or around heavy cover and want dependable performance without paying top-dollar for every spool.

My Favorite Saltwater Leader Material
"I very much believe that this line is basically the same line (if not identical and made in/by the same location/company) as Maxima Clear mono. That being said, Rio Saltwater Mono comes in heavy sizes. This line has has been perfect for building leaders for my two-hand setup (TFO Deer Creek 14' 6-7wt paired with Gaelforce Equalizer EMT 8/9 shooting head), and it's helped me land hundreds of redfish, sea trout, southern flounder, and black drum on the Texas Coast. The heavier mono can be tough to pull straight or properly cinch down for a uni knot (when using 3+ wraps on 40lbs + line), but i don't have any other negatives to speak of. I always feel confident using this line for leaders and it helps me dial in the length/taper for fairly specific setups and scenarios."
Wrong size sent to me
"It was the wrong size sent to me because I paid for 8 pound tippet and received 50 pound"
Tippet
"This is my favorite saltwater tippet. I use it in the 10lb and the 20lb versions and i have not wanted to fish anything else. The fact that it is mono meaning that it will sink helps get the wet flies down a little faster and gets the flies to the fish when it counts."
