Rio Elite Predator Deep Fly Line

The Rio Elite Predator Deep is built for the water most streamer anglers give up on: the broad, deep runs that hold the biggest fish in the river. Where the rest of the Predator series uses a 20 foot sink tip on a floating head, the Predator Deep sinks along its entire head, split evenly between type 7, type 5 and type 3 densities. That density stagger is what lets you get a big fly down and, more importantly, keep it down through the whole retrieve instead of watching it climb toward the surface the moment you start stripping.

Best For

Deep streamer work for predators - This is a line for pitching a large articulated pattern into a deep run, letting it settle, and swimming it at depth all the way back to the boat. Brown trout in big western rivers, pike and smallmouth in deep flats, and any fish holding below a level a standard sink tip cannot maintain.

Big, heavy flies - The head is short and powerful, so you can turn over a six inch fly with lead eyes on a single backcast. If you have been overlining a rod to make big streamers work, this taper does that job properly.

Temperature and Conditions

A coldwater and coolwater freshwater line. The coating and core are designed to stay flexible in the temperatures where predator fishing happens, from an early spring runoff to a late fall streamer bite. It is not built for tropical heat.

Taper, Weight and Design

The head runs 34 feet in WF7F through WF9F and 32 feet in WF10F and WF11F, on a 100 foot total length. The entire head sinks, divided into equal type 7, type 5 and type 3 sections, so the fastest sinking material is up front near the fly and the density steps down toward the running line. That arrangement keeps the fly as the deepest point in the system and holds a level swimming depth rather than the belly of the line pulling the fly upward. The front taper is short and powerful, sized to deliver weight rather than to present delicately.
