Description

The Rio Elite Musky Outbound carries the shortest and most powerful head in Rio's freshwater lineup, which is exactly what a day of musky fishing demands. The math of musky is brutal: a thousand casts with a fly the size of a small bird, and the only thing standing between you and a wrecked shoulder is a line that loads instantly and shoots without argument. This one is built to do that, then sink like an anchor and hold a big unweighted fly in the strike zone for the length of the retrieve.

Best For

Musky and big pike - Short, front-loaded heads made for throwing maximum line with minimal false casts. When a follow turns into a figure eight and then a reset, you want to be back on the water in one backcast, not three.

Single-hand and two-hand delivery - The 11wt and 12wt sizes match the biggest single-handed freshwater rods on the market. The 600 grain and T-27 sizes are built for genuinely giant flies and for anglers using two-handed rods for overhead firing power, which is increasingly how the serious musky crowd fishes.

Temperature and Conditions

A coolwater and coldwater freshwater line, at home from a humid August musky day through late fall when the big fish get serious. The intermediate running line and type 5 head are formulated to stay manageable across that range. Tropical heat is outside what it is designed for.

Taper, Weight and Design

Heads run 27 feet in the WF11, WF12 and 600 grain sizes, and 30 feet in the T-27, on a 100 to 105 foot total length. Head weights are 465 grains at WF11 and 510 grains at WF12, climbing to 810 grains in the T-27. The head is type 5 sinking and the running line is intermediate, so the entire system stays under the surface and the fly does not rise on the strip. Running lines are oversized deliberately, which gives you something to actually grip when casting, retrieving and strip-setting with cold or wet hands. The T-27 head is level and can be cut to a length and weight that matches your particular two-hander.

Features

SlickCast - Slick, durable coating that lets a short heavy head shoot, and survives being dragged across a boat deck and through fish teeth.

DirectCore - Supple low-memory core so the line lies flat in the stripping basket and does not tangle around your feet between casts, which on a musky day is the difference between fishing and untangling.

EasyID and Welded Loops - Line size printed on the line, welded loops front and back for fast wire-leader and backing changes.
