Description

The Rio Ambassador Series Coastal Crabber is a technique-specific fly line built for one purpose: getting crab patterns down to the sand and crawling them back up the beach in front of trophy striped bass. Developed in collaboration with Joe Webster, one of the most dedicated striped bass anglers in the world, this line went through extensive real-world testing on New England beaches. Joe once fished over 1,000 days consecutively, and many of those days were spent targeting trophy, green crab-eating striped bass on the beaches of New England. The result is a line that solves the specific challenges of crabbing for stripers: getting deep fast, staying in contact with the fly along the bottom, and surviving constant contact with sand, shell, and rock.

Best For

Striped Bass with Crab Patterns - This line is engineered for anglers targeting green crab-eating striped bass in surf, beach, and shallow coastal zones. It excels when you need to present crab flies along sandy bottoms and let them crawl naturally, mimicking the way real crabs move along a beach. If you fish the New England coast, Mid-Atlantic beaches, or any striper water where bass are keyed in on crabs, this line was made for exactly that scenario.

Picture a falling tide on a rocky Maine beach at dusk. Big stripers are cruising the wash, rooting for green crabs in the sand. The Coastal Crabber's fast-sinking head lets you present crab flies realistically, anchoring them to the sand and crawling them up the beach. Instead of your fly swimming unnaturally mid-column, it stays pinned to the bottom where the fish expect to find it. That level of realistic presentation is what separates this line from a general-purpose striper line.

Temperature / Conditions

The abrasion-resistant coating caters well to a wide range of temperatures, which can vary greatly over the course of the striper season. Striped bass fishing along the Northeast coast can range from cool spring nights in the 40s to warm summer days in the 70s and 80s, and this line is built to perform across that full spectrum. It is not a tropical line and is best suited for the cool-to-warm conditions typical of coastal New England and the Mid-Atlantic striper fishery.

Taper / Weight / Design

The Coastal Crabber uses a weight-forward, multi-density configuration (WF8I/S5/S7), combining an intermediate running line with a Sink 5 and Sink 7 head section. This design gets crab flies down to the bottom quickly while maintaining a direct connection from rod tip to fly. The well-thought-out taper provides a clunk-free casting experience with sink-tips, allowing for optimal distance. The overall line length was extended to 110 feet after testing revealed that the standard 100-foot length was not enough to reach feeding fish at range. This is a WF8 line, purpose-built for the 8-weight rods commonly used in striper fishing.

Features

Fast-Sinking Multi-Density Head - The Coastal Crabber features a fast-sinking, multi-density head that pins flies to the sand and allows them to be crawled naturally up the beach, exactly how big stripers expect to find them. The Sink 5 and Sink 7 sections at the front of the line create a steep angle that keeps your crab pattern glued to the bottom while the intermediate running line behind it stays manageable and easy to control.

Low-Stretch Core - Built on a low-stretch core to enhance feel, improve line control, and deliver more powerful hooksets into the tough mouths of large striped bass. When you are slowly crawling a crab fly along the sand, feeling the subtle take of a big striper is critical. The low-stretch core transmits those takes directly to your stripping hand, so you do not miss the moment to set the hook.

Abrasion-Resistant Coating - The line's coating was selected specifically for this technique, with its slightly harder formulation for improved durability when dragging through sand and rocks. Crab fishing is brutal on fly lines. You are constantly in contact with the bottom, grinding through sand, shell, and stone. The harder coating on the Coastal Crabber is built to take that punishment day after day without breaking down prematurely.

DualTone Color System - DualTone is a system perfected by RIO that marks the sweet spot of a fly line by providing an obvious color change in the line. The design of every fly line taper, its most likely application and each individual line size is carefully taken into account, and the location of the color change is unique to each fly line. This makes it easy to know exactly how much line you have out, when to pick up your cast, and when to shoot for distance.

Front and Back Welded Loops - The Coastal Crabber comes with front and back welded loops for fast, reliable rigging to both your leader and backing. No need to tie nail knots or add your own loops. Just loop-to-loop and fish.
