Description
The Redington Classic Spey Spare Spool turns one reel into a two-line system. Anyone fishing a two-hander already knows the problem: one run wants a heavy Skagit head and a T-14 tip, the next wants a Scandi and a long mono leader, and re-rigging on the tailgate in February is nobody's idea of a good morning. A second spool loaded and ready means the swap takes under a minute, and it costs a fraction of a second complete reel.
Design
This is the same classically ported, wide mid-arbor spool that ships in the Classic Spey reel, so it drops into the frame with the identical fit and the same exposed palming rim. The width is what makes the system work: there is room for a full shooting head, a hundred feet of running line and enough backing to matter, without the spool binding against the frame. The ports through the arbor let backing dry between trips rather than sitting wet under a fresh head.
Finish
The spool is anodized to match the reel, giving it the same hard, corrosion-resistant surface, and the same classically ported, traditional look. That matters more for a spare than for the reel itself, because spare spools spend their lives loose in a boat bag or a truck bed getting knocked against everything else in there. Rinse it after coastal days and it will stay presentable through many seasons.
Materials
The spool is CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, the same bar stock as the reel. Machining is what makes a spare spool worth owning: the tolerances between spool and frame stay tight enough that a thin running line cannot slip into the gap and jam, which is the failure mode that makes cheap cast spare spools more trouble than they are worth.
Drag
Type - The spool does not carry a drag of its own. The Classic Spey's adjustable triple-pawl system lives in the frame, so a swapped spool picks up exactly the same click, the same adjustment range and the same audible alarm you had on the spool you just pulled off. Nothing needs resetting.
Materials - The gear the pawls engage is machined into the spool itself and runs against the reel's brass pawls. Brass against machined aluminum wears in smoothly and predictably, so a spare spool that spends a season in the bag still clicks correctly the first time you fish it.
Arbor Size
Mid arbor with a wide spool, matched exactly to the parent reel. That geometry is the reason a spey angler can carry a floating Scandi setup on one spool and a Skagit-and-tips setup on the other without either one running out of room for backing.
Warranty
The spare spool carries Redington's lifetime warranty to the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. Dents and damage from accidents or normal wear are repaired or replaced for a flat fee. As of 2026, claims go through Far Bank's customer service department with proof of purchase.
