Redington Classic Spey Fly Reel

The Redington Classic Spey Fly Reel is built for anglers who measure a day by the swing rather than the count. Two-handed fishing asks something specific of a reel: enough physical weight to balance a 12 or 13 foot rod, enough capacity to carry a full head plus a few hundred feet of backing, and a drag you can hear from the far bank when a steelhead finally eats. Design

This is a classically ported mid-arbor reel with a wide spool, and each element of that description is doing work. The wide spool stacks a Skagit or Scandi head and heavy backing without forcing the reel to a dinner-plate diameter. The porting through the arbor lets backing dry out between sessions instead of sitting soaked against solid metal, which is what rots Dacron over a winter. Redington also weighted the reel deliberately rather than chasing the lightest possible build, so it counterbalances a long two-hander instead of leaving the rig tip-heavy after four hours of casting. A sizeable palming rim is exposed on the spool face for putting extra pressure on an oversized fish by hand.

Finish

The reel is anodized after machining, which puts a hard, corrosion-resistant layer into the surface of the aluminum rather than sitting on top of it as a coating. That holds up to the gravel, drift boat gunwales and freezing spray of a winter steelhead season, and it survives contact with anadromous coastal water when you rinse it after. The look is deliberately traditional, leaning on heritage aesthetics and classic porting rather than aggressive modern skeletonizing.

Materials

Frame and spool are CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum bar stock. This is not a die-cast reel, which matters for a full-size spey setup: machining holds tighter tolerances between spool and frame, so thin monofilament running line cannot wedge into a gap during a hot run, and 6061-T6 resists the flexing and deformation that comes from dropping a loaded reel on river rock. Redington pairs the aluminum with brass componentry in the working parts, where brass runs quietly against steel and resists galling far better than aluminum-on-aluminum contact.

Drag

Type - The Classic Spey uses a powerful, adjustable triple-pawl drag rather than a disc system. Three spring-loaded pawls engage a gear on the spool, which produces true click-and-pawl resistance in both directions and the loud, high-decibel sound that gives this style of reel its following. The drag is adjustable across a usable range, with enough top-end tension to slow an angsty anadromous fish and enough audible click to tell you a fish is on before you have processed the grab. It is not a sealed drag, so rinse it after coastal or estuary days.

Materials - The pawls and gear run in brass, the traditional material for this system and still the right one. Brass wears in rather than wearing out, it does not corrode into a seized mass the way steel pawls can, and individual pawls are a cheap and simple service part if you ever manage to round one over.

Arbor Size

This is a mid-arbor reel, and it is the correct choice for two-handed work. A large arbor picks up line faster but cannot swallow a thick Skagit belly, a full running line and 150 plus yards of backing without ballooning the outside diameter. The mid-arbor and wide spool combination keeps the reel a sane size while still delivering fast line pickup when a fish runs at you, which happens more on the swing than most anglers expect.

Warranty

Redington covers the Classic Spey with a lifetime warranty to the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. Damage from neglect, accident or normal wear is handled as a repair or replacement for a flat fee.
