Old Mariner Offshore Series Fly Reel (Standard Drag)

The Old Mariner Offshore Series Fly Reel (Standard Drag) is a machined saltwater reel built in Palm Beach, Florida by Paul Conover, who developed reels at Fin-Nor and founded Old Florida Fly Reel Company, the operation that later became Nautilus. The Offshore Series takes its central idea from offshore trolling reels rather than from fly reels: a double frame that carries the spool on both sides instead of hanging it off one. Old Mariner is blunt that these are not the lightest or the flashiest reels on the market, only the strongest, and every decision follows from that. It is a reel bought to hold a drag setting for the life of the owner without ever being opened. The Standard Drag is the knob adjusted version, for anglers who want fine resolution and a setting that stays where it was put. We stock it in 8wt and 10wt.

Design

Dual Sided Frame - Old Mariner describes itself as the first to build a fly reel on a dual sided frame, and it is the feature the whole range is organized around. The spool is supported at both ends, the way a trolling reel supports its spool, so the bearings, the drag and the spool stay in line under load instead of the spool flexing away from the frame at high drag. The brand's argument is that spool flex is what causes uneven drag wear and bearing failure on conventional single sided saltwater reels, and removing it is what lets them claim a lifetime of use with no maintenance. The cost of that choice is the next line item: a caged frame has no removable spool.

No Removable Spool, No Hand Conversion - Old Mariner states plainly that the spool cannot be changed and that the reel is 100 percent sealed at the factory, so retrieve direction cannot be converted later. Both points are worth understanding before you order. You change fly lines by stripping and respooling rather than by swapping a spare spool, and you must buy the reel in the retrieve hand you actually fish. Both of the sizes we currently stock are left hand retrieve.

Ported Spool and Large Knurled Knob - The spool is ported through its face, which drops rotating mass and lets soaked backing dry between sessions rather than sitting against solid metal for a week of a trip. Old Mariner calls the result a low startup inertia spool, meaning the spool begins turning at the moment a fish pulls rather than jolting against a stack that has set while the reel sat in a rod holder. The drag is worked through an oversized knurled knob sized to be found and turned with wet hands.

Built to Order - Old Mariner assembles reels when they are ordered rather than pulling them off a shelf, and the reels are serialized. An outgoing click is offered as a factory option at the time the reel is built, so a reel ordered without one is silent on the way out and stays that way.

Finish

Black Anodized Frame, Silver Anodized Spool - The Offshore reels are anodized rather than painted, which drives corrosion protection into the surface of the aluminum instead of laying a coating on top of it that can chip and start a corrosion site. Dealer specification sheets describe the process as a military grade Class 3 anodizing. Old Mariner produces in limited batches and states that details such as the reel foot and the handle can vary in color between anodizing runs, so treat our photos as representative of the current batch rather than as a guaranteed colorway.

Materials

Machined Aircraft Certified Aluminum - Frame and spool are machined from aircraft certified aluminum sourced in the United States, and Old Mariner machines and assembles every reel and every component in its own Palm Beach, Florida facility. Machining rather than casting is what makes the rest of the reel work at this level of load, because a sealed drag only stays sealed if the housing and its seals meet within a narrow band, and a double frame only delivers its alignment advantage if both sides are cut to match.

Sealed Ceramic Ball Bearings - The spool runs on sealed ceramic ball bearings, which Old Mariner describes as the largest in the industry. Ceramic is chosen here for the same reason the drag is sealed: it does not corrode, and a bearing that cannot rust is a bearing that does not need to be serviced after a saltwater trip.

Drag

Type - A fully sealed internal drag, adjusted by the large knurled knob. Old Mariner gives it infinite settings across 2.25 turns from free spool to lockdown, and specifies that the drag will hold at any position it is set to rather than creeping under load. That 2.25 turn spread is the point of the Standard Drag: it gives you real resolution to dial a precise pressure at the strike. The alternative in the range is the Lever Drag, which covers the same free spool to lockdown span in a single turn of a lever for anglers who need to dump or add pressure instantly, and which we stock separately as the Old Mariner Offshore Series Fly Reel (Lever Drag). Old Mariner's own spec sheet lists a fine drag adjustment range of 0 to 40 lb while dealer listings for the same reels list 0 to 20 lb, so we are not quoting a maximum drag figure until we can confirm one.

Materials - Old Mariner does not publish the drag stack material on its own site. Dealer specification sheets for the Offshore reels describe it as highest grade cork impregnated with aerospace grade Teflon, which is consistent with the Fin-Nor lineage behind the design, but we have not confirmed that with the factory and we are not presenting it as a factory specification. What is confirmed is the sealing: the drag housing is closed at the factory, is rated maintenance free for the life of the reel, and is the reason the reel cannot be converted to the other retrieve hand afterward. Salt and sand never reach the stack, so the pressure the knob delivered in year one is the pressure it delivers in year ten.

Arbor Size

2.1 Inch Arbor, Caged - Both sizes run a 2.1 inch arbor. The 8wt wraps it in a 3.735 inch spool 0.800 inches wide and takes roughly 165 yards of 20 lb Dacron behind a WF8. The 10wt runs a 3.975 inch spool 1.000 inches wide and takes roughly 245 to 260 yards of 30 lb Dacron behind a WF10. Old Mariner notes that all capacities are approximate and vary by backing manufacturer, and the arbor is fixed for the life of the reel because the caged frame means there is no spool to swap. The larger arbor on the 10wt is what makes it the more universal of the two: more line recovered per turn when a tarpon or a jack turns and runs at the boat, and less set into the backing after a long run.

Warranty

Lifetime Limited Warranty, Handled Direct - As of August 2026, Old Mariner warrants its reels 100 percent for workmanship, drag performance, defective parts and breakage from intended use, for the life of the owner, and will repair or replace at its discretion. Accidental damage and unintended use are excluded.
