Description
The Hardy Cascapedia MkV Fly Reel is the rare classic that got a real engineering pass instead of a new colourway. The Cascapedia has always been bought for what it is: the look, the heft, the sound of a proper Hardy click on a salmon river. The MkV keeps all of that and rebuilds what sits behind it, adding a new sealed carbon disc drag on the three largest sizes, a larger ergonomic drag knob, and updated sizing suited to both modern and classic rods. It is still bar stock aluminum, still made in Alnwick, England, and still sounds like a Cascapedia.
Design
Classic Cascapedia Design, Modern Engineering - The MkV holds the traditional Cascapedia silhouette that people buy the reel for, while the engineering underneath has been brought up to date throughout. The sizing has been revised so the range balances properly on modern rods as well as the classic ones it was originally cut for, which is the practical difference between a reel that looks right on the shelf and one that fishes right in your hand.
Larger Ergonomic Drag Knob - The drag knob has been enlarged and reshaped for easy, precise adjustment. On a salmon reel this is not cosmetic: you adjust drag mid-fight, often with cold wet hands, and a knob you can find and turn without looking is the whole point.
Finish
Finished in black and silver, the traditional Cascapedia treatment.
Materials
Bar Stock Aluminum - Machined from bar stock aluminum for a build that is lightweight, rigid and durable. Bar stock holds tighter tolerances than casting and resists the flex and impact damage that a big reel takes over a long season.
Drag
Type - The three largest sizes carry a new sealed carbon disc drag, sealed against water and grit, and smooth and powerful enough for fish that run into the backing. Sealing is the meaningful upgrade here, because a salmon reel spends its life in the water and the rain.
Classic Hardy Sound - The timeless Cascapedia click is retained. That sound is a deliberate design decision, not a byproduct, and it is a large part of why people choose this reel over a modern equivalent.
Arbor Size
Traditional Arbor - The Cascapedia keeps the classic arbor profile that defines the design, sized across 4/5 through 10/11 to suit everything from a trout rod to a full salmon setup.
Warranty
Hardy reels are backed by the manufacturer against defects in materials and workmanship. Registering your reel with Hardy after purchase extends that cover, and repairs outside the warranty are handled by Hardy's service department in Alnwick.
