The Gaelforce Equalizer 15ft Altitude Extreme Distance Spey Rod is not a salmon rod that happens to cast a long way. It is a distance rod first, and Gaelforce sells it out of a separate catalog category from its fishing rods: Equalizer Extreme Distance, the range James Chalmers built for maximum distance casting on powerful 15, 16 and 18 foot rods, either wading deep or casting from a platform. There is a dividing line inside that category worth understanding before you buy. Gaelforce describes its two general purpose Extreme Distance rods, the 15ft 12# and the 18ft 10/11, as placing no restriction on which type of line they are suited to. It says the opposite about this one. In Gaelforce's own words the specific blank design characteristics of the Altitude place restrictions on the type of line it is suited to, and the rod is built around a 1000 to 1150 grain window fed by an EED80 extreme distance head. It does not even carry an AFTM number. The line rating field on Gaelforce's spec sheet for this model reads comp.

What you get for accepting that narrowness is a rod that does one job without compromising for any other. It has a medium flex running into a very strong butt section and it recovers very quickly, which is the pairing that lets you hold a long head under tension through a big change of direction and still fire it. The extra strong tip lifts 1000 grain plus lines off the water without side deflection, so the anchor lands where you aimed it rather than where the tip wandered, and the progressive action makes that repeatable across the four casts of a Spey-O-Rama round or across a long day on water you would otherwise need a boat to cover. Snake rolls, single Speys and the rest of the modern distance disciplines are all inside its range. If you want one Gaelforce that will fish a Skagit head and a sink tip on Tuesday and a long belly on Thursday, buy the Equalizer or the 15ft 12# Extreme Distance instead. This one is the specialist.

Graphite, Not Graphene - The Altitude blank uses what Gaelforce calls the finest new graphite materials. There is no graphene in it. Gaelforce runs a parallel G+ Equalizer Extreme Distance Graphene category built on 15ft 1in blanks with model names like Boomer, Beast and Weapon, and those are different rods at different prices. Worth knowing if you are cross shopping two Gaelforce distance rods that both say Extreme Distance on the tube.

Action, Recovery and Tip - Gaelforce rates its rods on three separate fields rather than one action word, and the Altitude reads progressive, fast, strong. Progressive means the bend runs deep instead of staying in the top third, which is what lets you load the butt with a heavy head. Fast is the recovery rating, and it is the field that matters most on a distance rod: a blank still oscillating when the loop forms puts waves into an 80ft head. Strong is the tip rating, and it is the reason the rod picks 1000 grains and more off the water cleanly rather than deflecting sideways under the load.

Grain Window - Gaelforce publishes a working range of roughly 1000 to 1150 grains and says the rod comes into a class of its own inside it. No EED head arrives from the factory at that weight, so hitting the window is a cutting job rather than a shopping decision. That is deliberate, and it is covered in detail under Recommended Lines below.

Weight and Balance - Gaelforce lists the weight field for this model as 12, in ounces to match the rest of the range: the Altitude+ page prints the same figure as 12ozs and the 15ft 12# Extreme Distance as 11.75ozs. Gaelforce describes the rod as very strong, light in hand and very well balanced, which on a 15ft competition blank means balanced under a heavy reel rather than light on a scale.

Finish and Component Set - Gaelforce does not publish a component list on the Altitude product page itself. The specification in the three sections below is the one it publishes on the other rods in the Equalizer Extreme Distance category, the 15ft 12# and the 18ft 10/11, where the features list is identical word for word and matches the standard Equalizer range as well, so it is a range specification rather than a guess about this model. On that list the blank is matt green with rich silver whippings, and every section carries an alignment dot. On a four piece 15ft rod that gets broken down and rebuilt on a competition ground, those dots are the difference between guides that are genuinely in line and guides that are close enough to load the blank unevenly. Guides

Stripping Guides - Fuji stripper guides. On a distance rod this is the single hardest working component on the blank, because every cast fires the entire shooting line through it at the highest line speed you can generate. A hard, low friction insert is the difference between the head carrying its full potential distance and losing a few feet to drag at the stripper, and it will not groove and start cutting the coating off a running line after a season.

Snake Guides - Hard chrome snakes run the length of the rod. Hard chrome is the corrosion resistant, low mass standard on salmon rods: it survives wet Atlantic weather and tidal beats, and it keeps weight off the tip sections, which on a 15ft blank being asked to recover very quickly is exactly where added mass does the most damage.

Reel Seat

The rod uses a superior grade Alps Tri-Lock down locking reel seat. Down locking moves the reel rearward and shifts the balance point back toward your lower hand, which is what makes a 15ft rod feel controllable rather than tip heavy, and it is the conventional arrangement on salmon rods for that reason. The Tri-Lock mechanism uses a triple lock arrangement instead of a single knurled nut, which is what keeps a heavy reel clamped through the volume of casting a distance rod sees in a practice session, where a simpler seat works itself loose. Ahead of and behind the seat are Gaelforce's finest AAAA grade slim cork handles. AAAA is the top cork classification, with the fewest pits and fills, and the slim profile matters here because both hands stay wrapped around cork for hundreds of hard casts at a time.

Rod Tube

The rod ships in a cordura rod tube with a quality cloth bag. This is the fabric covered tube used across the standard Gaelforce ranges, not the aluminum Gaelforce Green tube with the laser engraved cap that comes on the G+ Graphene rods, so it is lighter to carry and it will take a knock without denting. Tube length is published for this model at 125cm, the same as the 15ft 12# Extreme Distance, and worth checking against your travel plans before you book a flight.

Warranty

Gaelforce does not publish written warranty terms for its rods, so we are not going to quote you a coverage period or a fee schedule that we cannot stand behind. Rods are covered against defects in materials and workmanship, and claims are handled case by case through the dealer network. Recommended Lines

This section decides whether the rod works for you, because Gaelforce built the Altitude around one family of heads and around cutting them to fit. The rod wants roughly 1000 to 1150 grains and every EED80 head leaves the factory heavier than that on purpose. Gaelforce says you can trim an Extreme Distance head at the rear or at the front, up to a maximum of 18 inches at the front, without altering its flight characteristics, and its own cutting guide puts a finished head at 70ft to 73ft for experienced distance casters on 15ft competition rods, or 68ft to 69ft on rods with less power and for intermediate casters. The method it publishes is worth following: trim from the rear, make the first cut at least 18 to 24 inches longer than your target, then work down in 3 inch steps and cast between each one, and keep the offcut for building short sections later. There is no single correct length. Wading depth, the size of the angle change you are making and your own stroke all move it.

Gaelforce Equalizer Extreme Distance Head - The EED80 Lite, 80ft and 1234 grains out of the box, and one of the two lines Gaelforce lists on this rod's own product page. It is the lightest of the three 80ft heads, which makes it the easiest one to bring inside the Altitude window without cutting deep into the taper. Gaelforce describes it as a one piece line whose profiling is built for exactly this kind of custom cutting from the rear.

Gaelforce Equalizer Weapon Extreme Distance Head - Our listing for the rest of the EED family, sold by grain weight. The 1296 grain option is the 80ft Altitude head at 84 grams, which shares this rod's name. The 1342 grain option is the 80ft Weapon head at 87 grams, the heaviest of the three and the one to choose if you want more material to tune away. The 1420 and 1466 grain options are the 85ft and 90ft heads, which Gaelforce aims at 18ft platform casting rather than at a 15ft rod. All of them use the same exceptionally supple coating, which is what lets the head hold its shape in flight at high line speed instead of collapsing the loop.

Gaelforce Equalizer Stormer Extreme Distance Overhead - A 65ft head at 848 grains, and the second line on this rod's published recommendation. It sits below the spey window deliberately, because it is the overhead distance head: a new front taper with a supple front profile mix, built to turn over when the wind is strong and shifting, and usable straight out of the box without cutting. Gaelforce also points it at anglers fishing long dry line heads on slick shooting line.

These are all shooting heads, and none of them fishes without a running line behind it.
