Nice frog
"A little bulky, but a good alternative if you don’t tie your own Sam’s One Bug."
The Umpqua Freaky Frog Fly is a topwater pattern designed to pull aggressive bass out of the thickest cover. Created by signature tyer Chad Johnson, this fly features a durable foam body and active rubber legs that drive predatory fish crazy. It lands with a realistic "splat" and rides high on the surface to trigger explosive strikes from largemouth and smallmouth bass. This is a "must-have" pattern for your warmwater box when fishing heavy vegetation.
This pattern imitates a frog swimming or resting on the surface. Its profile and leg movement mimic a vulnerable amphibian struggling in the water.
Cast this fly directly into lily pads, weed beds, or near submerged logs. The heavy weed guard allows you to fish it in places where other flies would snag. Strip the line to make the fly push water and create a commotion. Pause the retrieve frequently. During the pause, the rear of the fly dips slightly while the rubber legs splay out. This motionless drift is often when the strike happens.
Fish the Freaky Frog during the warmer months when frogs are active. It performs best in low-light conditions like early morning or late evening. It is also an excellent choice for mid-day fishing if you are targeting fish holding deep in the shade of heavy cover.
We like this fly because its foam construction makes it incredibly durable and buoyant. Unlike deer hair bugs that can become waterlogged, the Freaky Frog floats high all day long. The movement of the rubber legs combined with the "tail dip" action gives it a lifelike appearance that fools pressured fish.
