Trip Summary
FM Combination Trips connect Fish Mongolia’s Headwaters Expedition with its Classic Canyon Adventure, creating an extended wilderness journey through two distinctly different sections of a protected river in western Mongolia. The standard 2027 package includes 15 nights and 12 fishing days, beginning with a camel- and horse-supported walking and wading expedition through the upper river before transitioning into a multi-day float through larger canyon water. Anglers pursue Taimen, Mongolian Trout, and Arctic Grayling while moving between temporary Nordic tipi camps and traditional Mongolian ger camps. With two anglers per guide and a maximum of four guests during the Headwaters portion, this is an exceptionally remote, physically active trip intended for experienced anglers who want significantly more time and variety than a single-section expedition.
Who's It For?
Complete headwaters-to-canyon journey
This extended program links Fish Mongolia’s intimate Headwaters Expedition with its Classic Canyon Adventure. Anglers progress through small upper-river channels, braided reaches, broad valleys, and increasingly substantial canyon water while covering new water throughout the trip.
Two distinct fishing styles
The Headwaters portion emphasizes walking, wading, and carefully covering water on foot, while the Canyon portion is primarily accessed using non-motorized rafts or drift boats. The combination allows anglers to experience both technical wade fishing and efficient boat-based exploration during a single trip.
Nomadic caravan access
Camels and horses transport camp equipment through roadless headwater country, allowing the group to reach water that cannot be accessed by conventional vehicles. Anglers walk or ride between camps while the support team moves luggage, provisions, and temporary shelters downstream.
Small-group, fully supported expedition
The Headwaters portion is limited to four anglers, with two anglers sharing each professional guide. Guides, cooks, wranglers, drivers, and camp staff manage the expedition logistics, allowing guests to concentrate on fishing despite the program’s remote setting.

Seasonal Fishing
Calendar
The opening weeks bring long daylight hours and an actively changing river following spring runoff. Higher flows, cold water, and variable clarity are possible, so anglers should be equipped for both large surface flies and subsurface streamer presentations.
This period generally offers the warmest weather and longest comfortable fishing days. Terrestrial activity can create excellent dry-fly opportunities for Trout and Grayling, while Taimen may respond to both rodent-style surface patterns and streamers. Rain can still change water levels quickly.
Cooler nights, autumn color, and declining water temperatures characterize the later season. Conditions may favor active Taimen and clear-water presentations, but frost, freezing nights, wind, and occasional snow become increasingly possible. Guests should prepare for both warm afternoons and winter-like weather.
Lodging & Accommodations
Accommodations
The standard package includes two single-occupancy hotel nights in Ulaanbaatar and shared accommodations throughout the river expedition. The Headwaters portion uses spacious Nordic-style tipis before transitioning into traditional Mongolian ger camps used along the lower Headwaters and Canyon sections. Two anglers normally share each tipi or ger. Sleeping arrangements include cots or beds, pads, blankets, and pillows, while camp systems normally provide hot showers and private toilet facilities. Guests must bring an appropriately rated sleeping bag, generally suitable for temperatures of approximately 15°F or below.
Food
Professional camp cooks prepare three substantial meals each day, supplemented by snacks and hot and cold beverages. Breakfast is served before fishing, lunch may be prepared beside the river, and dinner is served after the group reaches camp. Beer, wine, and locally available spirits are provided on the river. Dietary restrictions can often be accommodated when communicated well before the trip, although ingredient availability is limited in this remote environment.
Connectivity
Guests should assume there will be no cellular service, internet access, or conventional electricity throughout the river portion of the expedition. Satellite communication is maintained for operational and emergency use rather than routine personal calls. Anglers should bring sufficient batteries, power banks, or a compact solar charger for cameras and other essential electronics. Regular connectivity resumes after returning to Ulaanbaatar.

19-Day Itinerary
Each day is carefully planned to maximize your fishing success while experiencing the best of what this destination has to offer. Itineraries are flexible based on conditions and guest preferences.
Most U.S. travelers require approximately 20 to 30 hours to reach Ulaanbaatar, usually connecting through Seoul and sometimes through Tokyo or Istanbul. Because travelers cross the International Date Line, they generally depart home on Day 1 and arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport on Day 2. A Fish Mongolia representative will meet you for the transfer to your hotel. This earlier arrival creates the additional hotel night recommended by the outfitter and is at the guest’s expense.
This complete open day provides time to recover from international travel, adjust to the time difference, and absorb potential airline delays without jeopardizing the expedition. Fish Mongolia and Mongolia River Outfitters offer complimentary touring service in Ulaanbaatar and nearby areas with experienced staff. The required additional hotel night can be arranged and added to the package, while personal meals, admission charges, and other incidental expenses remain the guest’s responsibility unless confirmed otherwise. The regularly included pre-trip hotel night begins this evening.
Fish Mongolia will coordinate the scheduled journey from Ulaanbaatar to western Mongolia. The normal route uses a commercial flight to a regional airport followed by an extended 4x4 transfer, although an overnight train and road transfer may be substituted when flight schedules require it. Movement may therefore begin late on the preceding evening. The exact schedule is confirmed before departure. After reaching the river, guests settle into the first camp and prepare for the expedition.
The fishing begins in the remote Headwaters, where camels and horses move equipment between temporary camps while anglers explore the river primarily by walking and wading. As the journey progresses, the group transitions onto larger water and uses rafts or drift boats to continue through the Classic Canyon section, fishing new water and moving to a prepared camp each day. Two anglers share each professional guide. The daily schedule, fishing methods, camp locations, and pace remain flexible according to water conditions, weather, group ability, and expedition logistics.
After leaving the final river camp, the group returns to Ulaanbaatar using the scheduled combination of 4x4 transportation and commercial air or rail service arranged for that departure. Upon arrival, you will transfer to the hotel for the final included night. Because domestic schedules can change, international flights should not be booked for this same day.
After breakfast, you will transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your international flight home. Depending on the routing, departure time, and International Date Line crossing, most travelers arrive home later on Day 18 or on Day 19.
Frequently Asked Questions
GET IN TOUCHThe standard program links Fish Mongolia’s Headwaters Expedition with its Classic Canyon Adventure. The Headwaters are smaller, more intimate, and explored primarily by walking and wading with camel and horse support. The Canyon section is larger and accessed mainly using non-motorized rafts or drift boats. The standard 2027 package is listed as 15 nights with 12 fishing days, although exact duration and logistics should be confirmed for the selected departure.
Fish Mongolia operates from approximately mid-June through early September. Early dates may encounter colder water and higher flows following runoff, while July and early August generally offer the warmest weather and strongest terrestrial activity. Late August and early September bring cooler water, autumn conditions, freezing nights, and a greater possibility of snow. Every period can produce excellent fishing, with daily results determined by water level, clarity, temperature, and weather.
Taimen are low-density apex predators, and anglers should expect periods of sustained casting between opportunities. Most fly-caught Taimen measure approximately 30 to 40 inches. Fish exceeding 40 inches are noteworthy, and fish approaching or exceeding 50 inches are exceptional. Covering two sections provides varied water and more fishing time, but it does not guarantee a particular number or size of Taimen.
Two anglers normally share each professional guide, with guides rotating during the expedition. The Headwaters portion emphasizes walking and wading as the group moves between temporary camps with pack-animal support. The Canyon portion uses non-motorized rafts or drift boats, allowing anglers to cast from the boat and stop to fish suitable banks, runs, and pools on foot. The group generally covers new water each day, but the schedule remains flexible around conditions and logistics.
This is one of Fish Mongolia’s most physically demanding programs. Guests should be comfortable walking over uneven ground, repeatedly wading rocky rivers, crossing channels, entering and exiting boats, and casting large flies for extended periods. Riding horses may be possible during portions of the Headwaters journey, but guests should not depend on riding as a substitute for adequate mobility and fitness. Previous wilderness and wading experience are strongly recommended.
A 9-foot, 8- or 9-weight single-handed rod is the most versatile choice, and Fish Mongolia recommends bringing two complete Taimen outfits. One should carry an aggressive-taper floating line for surface flies, while the second should carry a cold-water sink-tip or sinking line for streamers. Reels require dependable drags and substantial backing. A 5- or 6-weight rod with a floating line covers Lenok and Grayling. A switch or short Spey rod can be useful while wading but is less practical from a drift boat.
Fish Mongolia supplies proven Taimen, Trout, and Grayling flies as part of the package. Taimen patterns include large streamers, tube flies, gurglers, and rodent-style surface flies, generally fished on straight 20- to 40-pound fluorocarbon. Lenok and Grayling are targeted with terrestrials, attractor dries, nymphs, and small streamers using approximately 2X to 4X leaders and tippet. Fishing is fly-only and catch-and-release with single barbless hooks. Tandem and treble-hook flies are prohibited.
Mongolian Trout, commonly called Lenok, are the primary secondary species and provide dependable dry-fly, nymph, and streamer fishing. Arctic Grayling are also present and can offer excellent surface action in suitable riffles and runs. Amur Pike and Amur Trout are associated with Mongolia River Outfitters’ eastern Mongolia program and should not be expected on Fish Mongolia’s western river.
Two anglers normally share a Nordic tipi during the upper portion and a traditional Mongolian ger during later sections. Camps provide cots or beds, basic bedding, hot showers, and private toilet facilities, but remain temporary wilderness camps rather than permanent lodges. Guests should assume there is no cellular service, internet, or conventional electricity on the river. A sleeping bag rated to approximately 15°F or below and sufficient batteries or personal charging equipment are essential.
Scheduled domestic transportation between Ulaanbaatar and the river is included. The normal route uses a commercial flight to a regional airport followed by a lengthy 4x4 transfer. Because domestic schedules are irregular, Fish Mongolia may instead arrange an overnight train followed by road transportation. An optional private charter may be available at additional cost. Domestic baggage limits are restrictive, and excess or oversized baggage charges are not included.
Most U.S. travelers connect through Seoul, with the Seoul-to-Ulaanbaatar flight taking slightly more than three hours. Tokyo and Istanbul are the principal alternatives, and total travel from the United States commonly requires approximately 20 to 30 hours. Fish Mongolia recommends arriving one day earlier than the standard package date to create a complete rest, touring, and travel-buffer day in Ulaanbaatar. U.S. tourists currently do not require a visa for stays of 90 days or less, and passports must remain valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Entry requirements and flight schedules should always be reconfirmed before booking.
