Trip Summary
FM Classic Canyons Adventure is Fish Mongolia’s original guided float trip through the dramatic canyon section of a protected western Mongolia river. Limited to six anglers, the standard 2027 package includes 10 nights and seven full fishing days, with two anglers sharing each professional guide and non-motorized drift boat or raft. Guests float through new water each day while pursuing Taimen, Mongolian Trout, and Arctic Grayling beneath limestone cliffs, granite formations, and forested canyon walls. A string of comfortable streamside ger camps provides beds, wood-burning stoves, hot showers, professionally prepared meals, and attentive service, making this an excellent choice for anglers who want a remote Taimen expedition without the more demanding walking and tipi-based camping of the FM Headwaters program.
Who's It For?
Continuous no-shuttle float
Anglers leave directly from camp each morning, fish downstream through new water, and arrive at another prepared camp that evening. This format eliminates daily vehicle shuttles and allows the group to explore a substantial and varied section of the river during the week.
Protected Taimen fishery
Fish Mongolia operates within a carefully managed Taimen Sanctuary where international fishing is limited, fly-only, catch-and-release, and restricted to single barbless hooks. Taimen are the principal target, with Mongolian Trout and Arctic Grayling providing additional dry-fly and light-tackle opportunities.
Comfortable streamside ger camps
Every river night is spent in a traditional Mongolian ger furnished for two guests with beds or cots, linens, blankets, carpets, and a wood-burning stove. Dedicated dining gers, hot showers, private toilet facilities, and professional camp staff create an unusually comfortable base for such a remote expedition.
Small-group professional support
Each departure accommodates no more than six anglers, with two guests sharing each professional guide and boat. A separate support team moves equipment downstream and prepares each new camp, allowing anglers to concentrate on fishing throughout the journey.

The standard package includes one pre-trip and one post-trip hotel night in Ulaanbaatar. Fish Mongolia recommends arriving one additional day early for a complete rest, touring, and travel-buffer day. The additional hotel night is not included in the standard rate but can be arranged and added to the package.

Opening departures encounter long daylight hours and a river still transitioning from spring runoff. Flows may be higher, temperatures cooler, and clarity more variable. Anglers should carry both floating and sinking presentations because neither surface conditions nor low water can be assumed.
July generally provides the warmest temperatures and longest comfortable fishing days. Terrestrial activity can produce excellent dry-fly fishing for Trout and Grayling, while Taimen may respond to both rodent-style surface flies and streamers. Rainstorms can still change river levels and clarity quickly.
August brings cooler nights, shorter days, and the beginning of autumn conditions in the high country. Water may become lower and clearer, creating technical presentations and occasional sight-fishing opportunities. Frost and cold weather are increasingly possible, particularly later in the month.

The standard package includes two single-occupancy hotel nights in Ulaanbaatar and eight shared river nights in traditional Mongolian gers. Each sleeping ger accommodates two anglers and includes beds or cots, linens, blankets, carpets, a small table, wash basin, chairs, and a wood-burning stove. Camps also feature a separate dining ger, hot-shower facilities, and clean private toilets located a short walk from the sleeping area. Bedding is provided, although some guests choose to bring an optional lightweight sleeping bag for additional warmth.
Food
Professional camp cooks prepare substantial breakfasts, streamside lunches, and multi-course dinners featuring a mixture of Asian, Mongolian, and Western dishes. Snacks and drinks are carried aboard the boats, while beer, wine, and Mongolian vodka are available in camp. Vegetarian meals and many dietary restrictions can be accommodated with sufficient advance notice, although ingredient availability is naturally limited in this remote setting.
Connectivity
WiFi and cellular service are generally available at the Ulaanbaatar hotel. Once guests depart the capital, they should expect no internet access, cellular coverage, or conventional electricity for the duration of the river trip. Fish Mongolia carries satellite communication equipment for operational and emergency use. Guests should bring sufficient batteries, power banks, or a compact solar charger for personal electronics.

14-Day Itinerary
Each day is carefully planned to maximize your fishing success while experiencing the best of what this destination has to offer. Itineraries are flexible based on conditions and guest preferences.
Most U.S. travelers require approximately 20 to 30 hours to reach Ulaanbaatar, usually connecting through Seoul and sometimes through Tokyo or Istanbul. Because travelers cross the International Date Line, they generally depart home on Day 1 and arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport on Day 2. A Fish Mongolia representative will meet you for the transfer to your hotel. This earlier arrival creates the additional hotel night recommended by the outfitter and is at the guest’s expense.
This complete open day provides time to recover from international travel, adjust to the time difference, and absorb potential airline delays without jeopardizing the expedition. Fish Mongolia and Mongolia River Outfitters offer complimentary touring service in Ulaanbaatar and nearby areas with experienced staff. The additional hotel night can be arranged and added to the package, while personal meals, admission charges, and incidental expenses remain the guest’s responsibility unless confirmed otherwise. The regularly included pre-trip hotel night begins this evening.
Fish Mongolia will coordinate the scheduled journey from Ulaanbaatar to western Mongolia. Most departures use a commercial flight to a regional airport followed by an extended 4x4 transfer. When commercial flight schedules do not align with the trip, an overnight train and road transfer may be substituted, in which case travel may begin late on the preceding evening. After reaching the river, guests settle into the first ger camp, meet the guide team, and prepare equipment for the fishing days ahead.
Each morning, two anglers depart directly from camp with their professional guide in a non-motorized drift boat or raft. The group fishes downstream through a new section of canyon water, with opportunities to cast from the boat and stop to wade productive runs, pools, banks, and structure when conditions allow. Lunch is served beside the river, and a separate support team moves luggage and equipment to the next ger camp. Daily distance, fishing methods, and timing remain flexible according to water conditions, weather, and the group’s priorities.
After breakfast, the group leaves the final river camp and returns to Ulaanbaatar using the scheduled combination of 4x4 transportation and commercial air or rail service arranged for that departure. Upon arrival, you will transfer to the hotel for the final included night. International flights should not be scheduled for this same day because domestic transportation and weather delays are possible.
After breakfast, you will transfer to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your international flight home. Depending on the routing, departure time, and International Date Line crossing, most travelers arrive home later on Day 13 or on Day 14.

The Headwaters Expedition is limited to four anglers and requires considerably more walking, wading, and overland movement with camels and horses between tipi camps. Both programs target the same three species, but Classic Canyons offers easier daily access, more consistent camp comfort, and less strenuous fishing.
Classic Canyons departures generally operate from mid-June through August. Mid-June and early July may bring higher flows and cooler water following runoff. July generally offers the warmest weather and strongest terrestrial activity, while August brings cooler nights and potentially lower, clearer water. Every period can produce excellent fishing, with river level, clarity, temperature, and weather determining daily conditions.
Taimen are low-density apex predators, and quiet periods or difficult days are possible even on a healthy river. Most fly-caught fish measure approximately 30 to 40 inches, fish exceeding 40 inches are noteworthy, and fish approaching or exceeding 50 inches are exceptional. Anglers should approach the trip as a hunt for memorable individual fish rather than expect a predictable number of daily hookups.
Two anglers normally share each professional guide and non-motorized drift boat or raft. Guides rotate during the week, allowing guests to fish with different members of the team. Anglers leave directly from camp, cover a new section of river, stop to wade suitable water, and arrive at another prepared ger camp that evening. Lunch is served streamside, and the day’s pace can be adjusted when guests prefer to reach camp earlier.
Advanced ability is not mandatory, but anglers who can efficiently cast an 8- or 9-weight rod with large flies will create more opportunities. Guests should be comfortable entering and exiting boats, standing or casting for extended periods, and wading rocky river margins when conditions permit. Classic Canyons is less physically demanding than the Headwaters Expedition, but it remains a remote wilderness trip with long fishing days and limited access to outside assistance.
A 9-foot, 8- or 9-weight single-handed rod is the most versatile Taimen setup. Fish Mongolia strongly recommends bringing two complete outfits, with an aggressive-taper floating line on one and a cold-water sink-tip or sinking line on the other. Reels should have dependable drags and ample backing. A 9-foot, 5- or 6-weight rod with a floating line covers Mongolian Trout and Arctic Grayling. Switch and Spey rods can be enjoyable around camp but are less practical from the boats.
Fish Mongolia supplies proven Taimen, Trout, and Grayling flies as part of the package. Taimen patterns include large streamers, tube flies, gurglers, and rodent-style surface flies, generally fished on straight 20- to 40-pound fluorocarbon. Trout and Grayling are targeted with terrestrials, attractor dries, nymphs, and small streamers using approximately 2X to 4X leaders and tippet. Fishing is fly-only and catch-and-release with single barbless hooks. Tandem, treble, and stinger hooks are prohibited.
Mongolian Trout, commonly called Lenok, provide dependable fishing with dry flies, nymphs, and small streamers. Arctic Grayling are also abundant in suitable riffles and runs and can offer excellent surface fishing. Amur Trout and Amur Pike are associated with Mongolia River Outfitters’ eastern Mongolia river and should not be expected during a Fish Mongolia Classic Canyons trip.
Each traditional ger accommodates two anglers and contains beds or cots, linens, blankets, wool carpets, basic furniture, and a wood-burning stove. Separate camp facilities provide hot showers, private toilets, and a dedicated dining area. Bedding is supplied, so a sleeping bag is not normally required for Classic Canyons. Some guests bring an optional lightweight sleeping bag rated to approximately 32°F for additional warmth and personal comfort.
