Trip Summary
Flowers River Lodge is a remote, floatplane-accessed Atlantic Salmon destination on the exceptionally clear Flowers River in northern Labrador. Hosting up to 12 anglers, the standard package combines six days of guided fishing with six nights at the lodge and included pre-trip and post-trip accommodations in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Two anglers share each guide and travel between roughly 25 named pools by motorized canoe, with most fishing done while wading. The program is best known for sight fishing to wild Atlantic Salmon with Bombers and other surface presentations, although traditional wet flies remain important throughout the season. Approximately 10.5 miles of lightly pressured river, manageable wading, opportunities for fish exceeding 20 pounds, and secondary Brook Trout and Arctic Char fishing make Flowers especially appealing to anglers who value visual fishing and true wilderness access.
Who's It For?
Gin-clear sight fishing
Under normal flows, the Flowers River is remarkably clear and allows anglers to see salmon holding, moving, and occasionally rising to a fly. This creates exciting opportunities to target individual fish with dead-drifted Bombers, skated surface flies, and carefully presented wet flies.
Large wild Atlantic Salmon
Flowers supports both grilse and multi-sea-winter Atlantic Salmon, including a legitimate possibility of fish exceeding 20 pounds. Large salmon are never guaranteed, but the river’s clear water can provide memorable visual encounters even when fish refuse the fly.
Low-pressure river access
Lodge guests fish approximately 10.5 miles of the Flowers River and rotate through roughly 25 named pools. Newfoundland and Labrador does not have legally private rivers, but floatplane-only access and extreme isolation make encounters with anglers from outside the lodge uncommon.
Flexible canoe-and-wade program
Motorized canoes transport each guide pair between pools, while most fishing is done on foot over relatively manageable riverbed. Both single-handed and light two-handed rods are useful, and anglers can alternate between dry flies, surface presentations, and traditional wet-fly swings as conditions dictate.

Seasonal Fishing
Calendar
The opening portion of the season often brings higher flows and fresh multi-sea-winter Atlantic Salmon entering the river. Larger wet flies and traditional swings can be important, although clear water and favorable levels may also create excellent dry-fly opportunities. Run timing and water conditions vary annually.
This period can provide a broad mix of grilse and larger Atlantic Salmon distributed throughout the river. Stable water can favor dead-drifted Bombers, skated flies, and sight fishing, while hot weather may produce low water or temporary fishing restrictions. Anglers should remain prepared for both surface and wet-fly presentations.
Cooler nights and generally lower, clearer water can make late-season fishing highly visual but increasingly technical. Smaller flies, longer leaders, and careful presentations become particularly valuable. Later-running Atlantic Salmon remain possible, and Arctic Char may provide an additional opportunity when conditions and guide strategy allow.
Lodging & Accommodations
Accommodations
Flowers River Lodge accommodates up to 12 anglers among several cedar and log buildings. The main lodge contains the kitchen, dining room, and two private bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Two separate log cabins accommodate two anglers each, while the newest guest building contains three bedrooms for six guests. A large screened wader room provides space for storing and drying equipment. Accommodations are generally shared, and neither private rooms nor specific room assignments can be guaranteed.
Food
Meals are hearty and designed around full fishing days. Breakfasts are prepared before anglers depart, while lunch may be served at the lodge or packed for the river depending on the selected fishing area. Dinners commonly feature fish, beef, chicken, or pork accompanied by soups, salads, side dishes, desserts, and evening snacks. Alcohol is not included. Dietary restrictions should be communicated well before departure.
Connectivity
The property is powered primarily by solar energy and provides satellite WiFi. Cellular coverage is generally unavailable, and internet performance can be affected by weather or other remote-system limitations. Guests should download essential documents before traveling and should not rely on the connection for time-sensitive work.

9-Day Itinerary
Each day is carefully planned to maximize your fishing success while experiencing the best of what this destination has to offer. Itineraries are flexible based on conditions and guest preferences.
Fly to Happy Valley-Goose Bay Airport (YYR), where a lodge representative will meet scheduled arrivals between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. You will transfer to the Otter Creek Bunkhouse for an included night based on double occupancy. A continental breakfast is provided the following morning, while other meals in Goose Bay are at your own expense.
Transfer to the floatplane dock for the approximately 170-mile flight to Flowers River Lodge. Floatplane operations are weather dependent, and the final departure time is determined by the aircraft operator. After arrival, you will settle into your accommodations, meet the staff, and organize your equipment. An initial fishing session may be possible if timing and conditions permit.
Each day, two anglers fish with one guide and travel between selected pools by motorized canoe. Most fishing is done while wading, although certain areas may also be fished from the canoe. Guides select water and presentations according to river level, temperature, fish movement, weather, and angler preferences. Lunch may be taken on the river or at the lodge, and the daily schedule can remain flexible when evening conditions warrant additional fishing.
Following breakfast, you will board the scheduled floatplane back to Goose Bay, subject to suitable flying conditions. A lodge representative will transfer you to the Otter Creek Bunkhouse for the included post-trip night. Dinner and other personal expenses in Goose Bay are not included.
After the included continental breakfast, transfer to Happy Valley-Goose Bay Airport for your commercial flight home. Because weather can delay floatplane travel, guests should avoid tight onward connections and carry travel insurance that addresses weather-related interruptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
GET IN TOUCHThe fishing season generally extends from mid-July through early September. Mid-July often offers higher water and opportunities for newly arrived multi-sea-winter salmon. Late July and early August can provide a broad mix of fish and favorable surface fishing, while late August and early September frequently bring cooler nights, clearer water, and more technical presentations. No period is universally best because annual run timing, river level, water temperature, and weather determine the quality of each week.
Flowers River Lodge accommodates up to 12 anglers, with two anglers sharing each guide and motorized canoe. The program encompasses approximately 10.5 miles of river and roughly 25 named pools. Guide pairs rotate through different sections and may fish several pools during a day, with selections based on water conditions, observed fish, angler ability, and recent fishing pressure.
No river in Newfoundland and Labrador is legally private. Flowers River’s floatplane-only location makes access exceptionally difficult, however, and anglers staying elsewhere are rarely encountered. It is best described as a lightly pressured or near-exclusive program rather than a private-water fishery.
Flowers is a productive Atlantic Salmon river, but this remains migratory-fish angling rather than a numbers-driven program. A day with one or two hooked salmon would be considered excellent, not an expected minimum, and experienced anglers can still encounter quiet periods. Clear water may reveal numerous fish that refuse every presentation. Anglers should value visual opportunities, careful fishing, and the possibility of an exceptional individual salmon rather than expect a predetermined catch rate.
Dry flies are one of the river’s defining attractions, particularly when flows, temperatures, and fish behavior align. Anglers may dead-drift Bombers, wake or skate surface flies, or use hitched presentations over visible fish. Traditional wet flies remain equally important when salmon are unwilling to rise or when higher water favors a subsurface swing. Serious anglers should arrive prepared to change methods instead of treating surface fishing as guaranteed.
Useful single-handed rods range from 8½ to 10 feet in 7- through 9-weight configurations. A light two-handed or switch rod from approximately 10½ to 13 feet matched with a 390- to 480-grain Scandi-style head can be effective in larger pools. Reels should have dependable drags and approximately 200 yards of backing. Bringing at least two fully functional rods is strongly recommended because replacement equipment is limited at this remote lodge.
Floating fly lines are the standard for both single-handed and two-handed fishing. Tapered or level leaders may be used, with 6- to 12-pound tippet covering most anticipated conditions. Productive patterns include Blue Charms, Thunder and Lightnings, Bee Bombers, and assorted traditional Bombers and wet flies. Small flies in sizes 10 and 12 can be important during low, clear conditions, so anglers should not arrive with only large early-season patterns.
Flowers River is a scheduled Atlantic Salmon river. Anglers must possess a valid Newfoundland and Labrador inland salmon fishing license and use one single, barbless, unweighted artificial fly at a time. The lodge operates a catch-and-release fishing program, and current regulations, environmental closures, and handling requirements must always be followed. Because rules can change annually or during the season, anglers should review the current DFO Anglers’ Guide before traveling.
The Flowers is generally considered one of Labrador’s more manageable wading rivers, and motorized canoes reduce the amount of walking required between pools. Guests must still be able to enter and exit canoes, stand on uneven riverbed, and remain outside for extended periods in variable weather. A wading staff can provide additional security, especially for anglers with balance or mobility concerns.
Flowers River Lodge is a single-river program without routine access to alternative waters. Guides can change pools, fishing times, fly size, leader length, and presentation when conditions become challenging, but they cannot eliminate the effects of extremely high, low, or warm water. DFO may also impose temporary environmental closures when temperatures become unsafe for Atlantic Salmon. Anglers should understand this limitation before selecting any remote single-system fishery.
Guests fly commercially to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, overnight at the included Otter Creek Bunkhouse, and travel to the lodge by chartered floatplane the following morning. The floatplane baggage limit is a strict 50 pounds per person in total, not 50 pounds plus a separate carry-on. Weather can delay travel in either direction, so guests should build flexibility into their commercial flights and carry insurance covering delays, trip interruption, and remote medical evacuation.
Medical emergencies and evacuations can happen in remote destinations, which is why we strongly recommend enrolling with Global Rescue before your trip. Global Rescue provides industry-leading medical and security evacuation services, and they also offer comprehensive travel insurance plans serviced through IMG. This all-in-one solution allows anglers to secure both emergency evacuation coverage and travel insurance through a single provider, helping ensure you’re protected if something unexpected occurs before or during your trip.
