Echo Swing Switch & Spey Rods

The Echo Swing Switch & Spey Rods are the least expensive two-handers Tim Rajeff's shop builds, and every model in the family sits at the same price, so the decision here is purely about which rod fits your water rather than how much rod you can afford. Swinging flies is a different discipline from single-hand casting. You use the water to load the rod instead of a backcast, you fish a short heavy head instead of a full line, and you work a run in methodical steps until something eats. The barrier has always been the cost of entry, because a two-hander, a spey head, a running line and a set of tips add up fast. The Swing is Echo's answer to that: a medium fast blank in a four piece travel layout, offered in eight models from a 3wt trout spey up to a 13ft 6in 8wt. What separates it from most cheap two-handers is that Echo publishes a Skagit grain window and a Scandi grain for every single model, which matters more than any other spec on this page, since two-handed rods are lined by grain weight and not by the line number printed on the blank.

We stock all eight models, and they fall into three groups. The 11ft 3wt and 11ft 4wt are trout spey rods, taking 240-270gr and 300-330gr Skagit heads. They are for swinging soft hackles and small streamers at trout on water you could nearly cover with a single-hand rod, where the two-hander buys you a clean cast with no room behind you rather than raw distance. The switch models, 11ft 6in 6wt, 11ft 7in 7wt and 11ft 8in 8wt, are short two-handers for real fishing situations where you need serious backbone but do not have the space for a full-sized spey. Echo publishes weights of 7.3oz, 7.7oz and 7.9oz for these three, light enough to fish all day from a boat, off a brushy bank, or on an indicator rig between swings. The spey models, 12ft 6in 6wt, 13ft 7wt and 13ft 6in 8wt, are the specialists at 8.0oz, 8.9oz and 9.9oz. The extra length lifts more line off the water, mends farther and holds a controlled swing across a wide run in a way no switch rod can, which is what you want on big winter steelhead and salmon water.

One detail in Echo's own numbers is worth knowing before you buy a head. At each line weight the spey model takes a grain window one full step heavier than the switch model of the same number, so the 11ft 7in 7wt switch and the 12ft 6in 6wt spey both call for 420-450gr, and the 11ft 8in 8wt switch and the 13ft 7wt spey both call for 480-510gr. Echo is stepping the grain by length, not by the printed line weight, so buy the head to the model rather than to the number on the blank. As for where this rod sits against pricier two-handers, Echo does not publish a modulus, a resin system or a named blank technology for the Swing the way it does higher in its own range, and it does not publish per-model tapers either. What you are buying is a well specified medium fast graphite blank with real hardware and a published grain window at the entry price, not a lightweight, fast recovering blank that will out-cast a premium rod at distance. For learning to swing, and for fishing hard in conditions where you would rather not risk an expensive rod, that trade is the right way round.

Blank

The Swing blank is finished in gloss blue steel and rated Med Fast by Echo across all eight models, in a four piece travel design. Echo's own explanation of that action rating is the useful part: in their words, medium action rods are ideal for anglers with more fluid casting strokes and have a larger sweet spot for a wider range of casting strokes, while fast action rods reward a more aggressive stroke and greater stroke control. On a two-hander that distinction does most of the work. A spey cast gets exactly one chance to convert your sweep into line speed, and a blank with a wide sweet spot still produces a cast when your timing is slightly off or your anchor is not perfectly placed, which are the two faults that wreck almost every early spey cast. Echo also separates action from power, noting that on a two-hand rod the action comes from the top half of the blank and the power from the bottom half, so a medium fast rod can still have the butt strength to turn a fish. That is the balance the Swing is built to: forgiving through the tip where you are learning, with enough backbone lower down to fish heavy tips and hold a big fish in current.

Guides

Stripping Guides - Echo fits SIC stripping guides. Silicon carbide is one of the hardest insert materials used in fly rod guides and one of the slickest, and on a spey rod the stripping guide earns that upgrade more than it does on a single-hander. Every cast fires the entire running line through it in one pass under full load, so friction there is a direct tax on distance, and the guide is the first thing to meet whatever sand and glacial silt your running line picked up off the bar you are standing on. SIC will not groove and start shredding line coating after a season the way a softer insert does. Seeing it on the least expensive rod in Echo's two-handed range is the clearest sign of where the budget went.

Snake Guides - Hard chrome snake guides run the length of the blank. Hard chrome is the durable, unglamorous standard for a rod that lives in cold rain and snowmelt: it resists corrosion, it takes the beating of loop-to-loop connections and sink tips clattering through on the retrieve, and it adds almost no weight out toward the tip, where mass costs the most on a 13ft 6in blank.

Reel Seat

The Swing uses an anodized aluminum reel seat. That is the right call on a two-hander at this price. Aluminum stays light, the anodizing shrugs off corrosion, there is no wood insert to swell or check after months of wet hands and rain, and it clamps a heavy spey reel down and keeps it there through the thousands of casts a swinging day involves. Echo lists two grip styles across the Swing family, so the handle is not identical on all eight models, but Echo does not publish which style goes on which model or the individual grip dimensions, and we are not going to guess at them here. What is consistent is that all eight are two-handed rods with a foregrip and a rear grip, and the trout spey and switch models are short enough to be thrown overhead with one hand when a run calls for it.

Rod Tube

Every Swing ships in a fabric-covered rod case with a rod sock. On a four piece rod that is 13ft 6in assembled, the case is not an afterthought, because the sections are long and awkward and they spend most of their life being wedged into a truck or a drift boat. A fabric-covered tube protects them without the weight and the dented-lid failure mode of a bare thin-wall aluminum tube. Keep both the tube and the sock; the case is what prevents the travel abrasion that Echo specifically excludes from warranty coverage.

Warranty

The Swing is covered by the ECHO Lifetime Warranty from Rajeff Sports, as published on echoflyfishing.com and read on 2026-08-17. Echo rods are covered against manufacturing defects for the life of the original owner, at Rajeff Sports' discretion, on rods bought from an authorized dealer. Echo draws a distinction between two services that both run through the same department: warranty covers manufacturing inconsistencies and defects, while repair covers incidental breakage during normal fishing use, which includes casting, line management and fighting fish. Both carry a processing fee. Echo does not publish a flat figure anymore. Their current policy states that the fee level differs by rod model and that your fee depends on a few factors and will be listed when you submit your claim, so treat any fixed dollar amount you see quoted elsewhere as out of date. If the failure is determined to be a fault in materials or workmanship, the fee is waived. Not covered: wear and cosmetic damage, excessive abrasion, vehicle accidents including rods broken in doors, saltwater corrosion, mold, extended sun exposure, lost rods or lost sections, and any rod used in an outfitter, rental, lodge or other fleet setting. If a model is discontinued and not repairable, Echo may offer a current equivalent replacement at 50 percent off MSRP. Two practical notes: claims start with an online form on Echo's site rather than by shipping the rod off blind, and Echo says a completed form gives them what they need to send the appropriate replacement parts. Replacement tip sections for most current production models can also be bought outright through Echo's website without filing a claim at all.

Recommended Lines

Line a Swing by the grain window for your exact model, not by the line number on the blank. Echo publishes both a Skagit range and a Scandi grain for all eight, and those windows step by length as well as by line weight, so a 7wt switch and a 7wt spey do not take the same head. Echo's own note on this is worth repeating: the right head size can still shift with your casting style and personal preference, so treat the published window as the starting point.

For the trout spey and switch end of the family, the Scientific Anglers Spey Lite Skagit Head is the direct match and covers more of this lineup than anything else we carry. It runs from 180gr to 420gr in 30 grain steps, which lands squarely on the 11ft 3wt at 240gr or 270gr, the 11ft 4wt at 300gr or 330gr, the 11ft 6in 6wt at 360gr or 390gr, and the top of the window on both the 11ft 7in 7wt and the 12ft 6in 6wt at 420gr. It is a short, aggressive, front-loaded taper built specifically for lightweight two-handed work, so it turns over sink tips and weighted streamers off a short stroke, which is exactly what a medium fast blank wants.

For the heavier switch models and the 13ft spey, the Airflo Superflo Max Skagit Floating Line is the natural pairing, and it comes from the same house, since Rajeff Sports distributes Airflo lines in North America alongside Echo rods. Its short, rear-loaded Skagit profile suits sustained anchor casting in tight quarters, and the floating body lets you mend, control swing speed and change depth by swapping tips rather than swapping lines. Take 450gr for the 12ft 6in 6wt or the 11ft 7in 7wt, and 480gr or 510gr for the 11ft 8in 8wt and the 13ft 7wt.

The 13ft 6in 8wt sits at 540-570gr, above where most light heads stop, and the Airflo Superflo Max Skagit Comp F.I.S.T. Sinking Line is the head that reaches it. It is a triple density design, a floating rear section, an intermediate mid-section and a type 3 sinking front, so it fishes deeper than a straight floating Skagit while the floating rear still lets you mend and track the swing. Take 540gr or 570gr for the 13ft 6in 8wt. It also overlaps the 13ft 7wt and 11ft 8in 8wt at 480gr and 510gr if you want one head that gets down without adding a heavy tip.
