The Durabrush is a brush-style baitfish pattern built for durability and versatility when targeting powerful saltwater species like GTs, Tarpon, Stripers, Snook, and Jacks. Its profile can imitate a wide range of forage, from Mullet and Bunker to Pilchards and Chub, making it a reliable option whenever predators are feeding on medium to large bait. The fly combines a sparse bucktail and saddle feather tail with a Foxy Brush head and tabbed eyes to create a full baitfish profile that moves water without becoming heavy or difficult to cast. Tied unweighted, it fishes well on flats, in the surf, or in open water. Each Durabrush is tied with durability in mind, with reinforced materials designed to hold up through multiple fish and tough saltwater conditions. Every fly is tied on a Gamakatsu SC15-2H 2X Strong Wide Gap hook, a proven choice for hard-fighting saltwater species.

Meet Patrick Blackdale

Patrick Blackdale is the Travel Director at Trident Fly Fishing and a lifelong angler with deep roots in the Rocky Mountain West. Before joining Trident, Patrick guided on Colorado’s Arkansas, Gunnison, and Taylor Rivers, where tying flies was part of everyday life. Like many guides, he spent countless evenings at the vise producing dependable patterns for the next day’s clients.

Patrick’s tying style reflects that background. His flies are built with a guide’s mindset: simple, durable, and effective across a wide range of fisheries and conditions. Rather than overly complicated patterns, he focuses on proven designs tied with high-quality hooks and reinforced materials so they can withstand fish after fish without falling apart.

The flies Patrick ties today follow the same philosophy he relied on as a guide: patterns that fish hard, last a long time, and consistently produce results on the water.
