Description
The Cortland Tropic Plus Intermediate XP Fly Line is an aggressively tapered, clear-headed saltwater line built to deliver large flies in deeper water. The Extra Punch design carries extra grain weight over a short 26ft head, loading fast-action saltwater rods quickly and turning over bulky, wind-resistant patterns with minimal false casts. It is at its best fished from a boat, off a beach, or deep in the jungle when you need to get a big fly down and keep it there.
Best For
Deeper Water and Big Flies - Built for anglers throwing large baitfish and heavy crab or shrimp patterns to predatory species such as tarpon, snook, redfish, and giant trevally. The full clear intermediate head sinks below the surface chop and stays connected to the fly, so you keep a straight line to the fish through the whole retrieve.
The aggressive taper lets you pick up, redirect, and shoot line in one or two false casts. When a fish changes direction and you need to re-deliver a heavy fly into a stiff headwind, the concentrated head weight loads the rod deep for a fast, powerful cast.
Temperature and Conditions
This line is formulated for tropical environments and extreme heat. The Tropic Plus coating and stiff monofilament core keep the line firm, slick, and tangle-free on a hot deck even when temperatures climb well above 90 degrees. In cold or temperate water the stiff core and hard coating will hold memory and coil, which costs you distance and makes line management difficult.
Taper, Weight and Design
The Intermediate XP uses a short, heavily front-loaded 26ft head that punches through coastal wind. A short front taper transfers energy hard into the leader to turn over weighted flies. Behind the head, 61ft of floating running line shoots easily with minimal overhang, for 100ft of total line. Because the head is overweighted relative to standard line ratings, it loads modern ultra-fast action saltwater rods without hunting for line speed.
Head weights by size: WF7 240gr, WF8 280gr, WF9 330gr, WF10 380gr.
Features
Tropic Plus Coating - A hard outer layer that keeps the line from going soft or sticky in blistering tropical sun. It reduces friction in the guides for higher line speed and fewer tangles underfoot.
Full Clear Intermediate Head - The 26ft head is clear through its entire length and sinks just under the surface, hiding the line from wary fish and cutting through surface chop for better strike detection and hook sets.
Shooting Technology Running Line - The floating ST-coated running line stays on top and shoots cleanly, so you can pick up and re-deliver quickly without stripping the head back inside the guides.
Double Welded Loops - Factory-welded loops front and back give a low-profile connection for backing and leaders that passes smoothly through the guides on a hard-running fish.
