Dating back to the 60s, the Brassie has been fooling midge-loving trout for years. The Brassie Fly was originally tied by Ken Chandler for fishing the South Platte in Colorado, and although his initial creation was a crude combination of transformer wire and heat shrink tape, it worked quite well. Refined over the years, the Brassie Fly maintains its wire-wrapped body, but its thorax was upgraded to peacock herl. Simple in appearance, the Brassie does a great job at imitating midge pupae and larvae as well as small caddis larvae.

The Brassie is a fly that you can tie on any month of the year, and it's especially effective tied on as a dropper fly when fishing a multi-nymph rig. Common sizes of the Brassie are 18-22, and it's a fly that you can fish in moving and stillwater. From the annual vacation on your favorite western tailwater to sunny winter days on your local stream, the Brassie is a fly that's hard to beat.
