Fly Tied by Umpqua Feather Merchants

The Black Beauty was designed to imitate heavy concentrations of tailwater midges. On many tailwaters around the US and beyond, bottom-release dams keep the rivers cold and clear year-round. In these fisheries, fish feed on plentiful food, including a large variety of midges. These trout can be difficult to fool, but this midge pattern features a simple design that's known for fooling picky fish. The fly features a thread body, copper wire ribbing, and a dubbing ball for a head. Available in sizes 20 and 22, these tiny midges are most effective when fished under an indicator or using tightline techniques. This is also a great dropper fly when fishing technical dries on tailwaters. There are several different versions of this fly, including one with a glass bead and one with a flashback and a glass bead. If you're an angler who enjoys targeting picky fish in tailwater or spring creek conditions, this is a fly that will help you catch more quality fish on the water.

Good for a Simple Pattern

"I really like the design of this fly but I prefer the flashback/glass bead for picky fish. That version (of the same fly) has more translucence in the water and seems to catch the attention of fish slightly better. That being said, this is a great choice for cloudy days and really picky fish. A great tailwater bug."
