Description
With their SA274 Curved Salt Hooks, Ahrex provides an excellent hook for tying baitfish patterns or anytime you need serious keeling power. Created with a short shank and super wide gap, this hook excels in tying patterns where keeling is crucial-think flies like bulky Game Changers and large synthetic patterns. The SA274 takes the profile of Ahrex's popular NS172 series and adds an A-Steel Finish so it can endure long days in salty environments-combined with its chemically sharpened point, this hook can hold its own when fishing for tough predators. Made in sizes 12 through 1/0, the SA274 Hook allows you to match a wide range of forage.
Uses
The SA274 is a pretty versatile hook, and it's a great option when tying large flies that you need to track true or as a leading hook on Blane Chocklett's Game Changer flies. With a range of sizes from small to medium, you can turn to the SA274 whether you're matching skinny sand eels with a Surf Candy pattern or larger articulated streamers.
Comparisons
Kona's BGH Big Game Hunter Hooks are a solid second option to the SA274 series. Like the SA274, these hooks have a wide gap and are strong enough to handle those large predatory fish. However, there are a few differences between these two hooks. The first is that the BGH has a black nickel finish, instead of Ahrex's A-Steel Finish; the second is the sizing options. The BGH stretches from a 1 all the way to an 8/0, while the SA274 starts at a 12 and goes up to a 1/0. While both of these are excellent hooks and provide keeling power when needed, if you're looking to tie truly large patterns, the BGH is a better option; inversely, if you're looking to tie smaller flies, then the SA274 is a safer bet.
