We appreciate your understanding and are glad to offer you access to past season gear at a great value.
The Orvis Hydros Fly Reel (Past Season Style) is the previous generation of the Hydros, sold here in the sizes and colors Orvis has since moved on from. This matters, because Orvis has replaced it: on the Orvis fly reel manuals page the booklet for this reel is filed as Hydros Reel (Old Model), and the reel now sold under the Hydros name is filed separately as Hydros Reel (New). The two are genuinely different reels. This one is built in sizes I through V, the current one only in II through IV. This one is lighter at every size the two share. This one is factory set for left hand wind and converts to right hand with the spanner driver tool packed in the box, where the current reel converts without a tool. What you are not giving up is the mechanism that made the Hydros a workhorse in the first place: a large arbor frame on a fully sealed center line drag with carbon and stainless steel discs, machined from 6061 aircraft grade aluminum.
A large arbor frame and spool, heavily ventilated through both, which Orvis specifies for optimum weight and balance on the rod. The reel foot is radiused for kink free leader protection. The spool release sits in the middle of the spool: press the latch and lift the spool straight out, no tools and no loose parts. The drag knob is indexed, so a setting you like can be counted back to rather than guessed at, and it is positioned to be reached without taking your hand off the reel. Every reel leaves the factory set for left hand wind; the retrieve is reversed by removing the frame lid with the included spanner driver tool, flipping the one-way bearing and its bushing, and keying them back into the surrounding stainless steel discs. Orvis retail stores and authorized dealers will also do the conversion.
The frame and spool are precision machined and anodized. Anodizing is an integral surface conversion rather than a coating, so it does not chip off a rim or a foot the way paint does, and it is what lets the reel take the rinsing Orvis asks for after saltwater use. The past season colors on this listing are Black, Silver, Ice Blue, Lilac, Matte Blue, Matte Gold, Matte Olive, Matte Red and Purple, and the Euro is offered in Matte Olive. Not every color was made in every size, so the color menu changes with the size you pick.
Frame and spool are machined from 6061 aircraft grade aluminum, the standard structural alloy for a reel that has to hold a spool true under load without carrying dead weight. Inside, the spindle runs on a one-way bearing and its bushing, backed by a brass bushing and a stainless steel bushing, and the whole drag chamber is closed by six O-rings. The handle knob turns on its own shaft and washer, and a counterweight opposite the handle keeps a loaded spool from wobbling on a fast run.
Type - A sealed center line disc drag. Orvis is explicit about the sealing rather than implying it: the owner booklet states that when the spool is assembled on the frame the drag system is completely sealed and impervious to corrosive elements, and that it requires no additional maintenance. Adjustment is infinitely variable across a wide range, clockwise to add resistance and counterclockwise to reduce it, and Orvis advises never setting the minimum below the pressure needed to stop the line over running on a fast take. Extra pressure comes from palming the exposed spool rim. Orvis describes the Hydros drag as having zero start up inertia, which is the trait that matters on light tippet when a fish first turns.
Materials - The stack is carbon and stainless steel. Orvis describes the Hydros drag as stacked carbon and stainless steel disc washers, and the parts list for this reel shows a push plate, a drag washer and three drag discs loaded by a spring washer. Carbon against stainless is the pairing that gives a fly reel a low, even coefficient of friction that does not spike when it is cold or wet, and because the chamber is sealed the surfaces never see the grit that makes an open drag chatter.
Large arbor. Orvis credits the layout with maximum line pick up, optimum drag consistency and superior fish stopping power, and the mechanism behind all three is spool diameter: line comes back faster per turn of the handle, it comes off in wider coils that fall out on the first cast instead of spiraling through the guides, and the drag torque stays closer to constant as backing goes out because the effective radius changes less. Worth knowing if you are cross shopping: the redesigned Hydros moved to a larger arbor still, which is part of why it gained weight at every size.
Every Hydros reel is unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship, and Orvis states that its reels are guaranteed for life against defects. Any breakage or malfunction its repair specialists judge to be a defect is fixed free of charge. Repairs and overhauls outside that are handled individually for a $30.00 handling fee plus the cost of any parts required, not to exceed $50.00 without prior approval, with a credit card taken before work begins. Orvis also offers a reel cleaning and reconditioning service that checks knots, splices, line and backing, cleans old line, and cleans and lubricates the reel. Terms are per the Orvis reel repair page as of August 2026 and are set by Orvis, not by us.

"Item was processed and delivered very quickly. This is my second Hydros V . It is very capable for big Albies in the Chatham rips. Plenty of drag, plenty of capacity, and although many advertise zero startup, this one actually delivers it."
