Hanak Fly Tying Hooks Quick Picks
- Best All-Around Dry Fly: Hanak Competition 100BL Hooks - A fine-wire barbless dry fly hook in sizes 10 through 20 that covers sulphurs, caddis, and most mayfly duns.
- Best for Jig Nymphs: Hanak Competition 470BL Jig Wave Hooks - The hook for Perdigons, Frenchies, and Blowtorches. The Wave Point bends the extra-long point slightly outward to keep fish pinned on a barbless jig.
- Best for Czech Nymphs: Hanak Competition 300BL Original Czech Nymph Hooks - The curved-shank original for caddis larvae, sowbugs, and weighted Czech nymphs in sizes 8 through 16. Medium wire sinks well without turning the fly into an anchor.
- Best for Streamers: Hanak Competition 900BL Streamer Hooks - Heavy wire, a wide gape, and sizes 6 through 10 for Woolly Buggers and small sculpins.
- Best Bead Pairing: Hanak Competition Round+ Slotted Tungsten Beads - Our best-selling Hanak product, a countersunk slotted tungsten bead in 2.0mm through 4.0mm that seats cleanly on the 470BL. Six finishes from black nickel to copper cover most competition nymphs.
How to Choose Hanak Fly Tying Hooks
Decode the model numbers by bend
Hanak numbers its hooks by family. The 100 series (100BL, 130BL) are dry fly hooks, with the 130BL adding the Wave Point. The 200 series (230BL through 290BL) are straight-shank stillwater, wet, and nymph hooks. The 300 series (300BL, 310BL, 330BL, 333BL, 360BL) are curved Czech nymph, buzzer, and pupa hooks. The 390BL is the Klinkhammer hook, the 530BL and 550BL are all-round hooks, the 470BL is the jig, and the 900 series are streamers.
Action: Pick the bend that matches the natural: straight shank for Pheasant Tails and Hare's Ears, curved for larvae, scuds, and pupae, jig for anything you want riding point-up on a tight line, and the 390BL for parachute emergers that hang in the film.
Tip: Within a family, wire weight is the main difference. The Hanak Competition 250BL Stillwater/Wet Hooks and the 260BL are heavy wire for small streamers and fast-sinking nymphs, while the 230BL and 280BL are medium wire, with the 280BL on a longer shank for stonefly and swimming-nymph profiles.
Barbless by design, not by pinching
Every Hanak hook here ends in BL, meaning it left the factory barbless. Hanak builds these around competition rules, so instead of a pinched barb you get an extra-long, chemically sharpened needle point that relies on penetration depth and steel hardness to hold fish.
Best for: Tiers who fish barbless water, compete, or want faster releases. The Hanak Competition 290BL Nymph/Wet Hooks are a good example: a 1X long straight shank in medium-strong wire that Hanak describes as holding fish through point geometry rather than wire thickness.
Pair hooks with Hanak beads
Hanak's slotted tungsten beads are cut to seat on jig hooks like the 470BL, and its countersunk brass beads fit standard straight-shank nymph hooks. The Hanak Competition Classic Brass Beads are the lighter, cheaper option for soft hackles and lightly weighted nymphs, while the tungsten Round+, Metallic+, Fluo+, and Diamond+ beads get flies down fast in heavy water.
Tip: A common starting point is a 2.0mm bead on size 16 to 18 hooks, 2.5mm on 14 to 16, 3.0mm on 12 to 14, and 3.5mm to 4.0mm on 10 to 12. Test fit one bead before you tie a dozen, since the gap on curved hooks like the 300BL can be tighter than the shank length suggests.
Why Trident Carries Hanak
Hanak Competition grew out of a Czech fly shop founded in 1997 and still run by the Hanak family, and the hooks are developed with the Czech competition anglers who fish them. That shows in the details: factory barbless, long needle points, a black nickel finish, and jig and Czech nymph shapes built for Euro nymphing rather than adapted to it.
Materials & Durability
- Hi-carbon steel: Hanak hooks are chemically sharpened hi-carbon steel, which takes a very fine point but is not stainless, so dry flies before closing the box.
- Black nickel finish: The dark coating cuts glare in clear water. Most of the line uses it, with a few models like the 290BL and 330BL in bronze.
- Protect the long point: The extra-long needle point is what holds fish without a barb. Avoid dragging flies across rocks in storage and check the point after every snag.
- Bead fit on jig hooks: Slotted beads should slide around the 60-degree bend without forcing. If you have to pry, go up a bead size or down a hook size.

Hanak Fly Tying Hooks FAQs
Q: Are all Hanak hooks barbless?
A: Every Hanak hook we carry has the BL suffix, meaning barbless from the factory. Hanak designs the point geometry to hold fish without a barb, so there is nothing to pinch down.
Q: What is the Hanak Wave Point?
A: An extra-long point bent slightly outward from the shank, developed with Czech competition anglers to improve hook-ups on barbless hooks. You will find it on the 470BL jig and the 130BL dry fly hook.
Q: Which Hanak hook should I use for Perdigons and Frenchies?
A: The 470BL Jig Wave. Pair it with a Hanak slotted tungsten bead so the fly rides point-up and gets down quickly on a Euro rig.
Q: What is the difference between the Hanak 300BL, 330BL, and 360BL?
A: All three are medium-wire curved nymph hooks. The 300BL is the original Czech nymph shape, the 330BL is a bronze multi-purpose Czech nymph and buzzer hook, and the 360BL has a more pronounced curve for pupae, scuds, and sowbugs.
Q: Do Hanak beads fit other brands of hooks?
A: Yes. Slotted tungsten beads fit most 60-degree jig hooks and countersunk brass beads fit most standard nymph hooks, but wire diameter varies by brand, so test one bead first.
Q: Are Hanak hooks good for stillwater fishing?
A: Several were built for it. The 230BL, 250BL, 260BL, and 280BL are labeled stillwater/wet hooks, and the 310BL Heavy Buzzer is shaped for chironomid pupae fished under an indicator or on a slow retrieve.
Hanak Warranty & Resources
Hanak does not publish a hook warranty that we could confirm, and hooks are consumables rather than warrantied gear. If a pack arrives short, bent, or with dull points, contact Trident and we will make it right. Hanak's own site is in Czech, but the annual catalogue is published in English as a PDF and is the best reference for the full hook and bead range.
