The Speckled Trout Outfitters is based in Blowing Rock, with a second fly shop in Boone. Guided trips extend throughout western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and southwest Virginia. Depending on the season and lodging location, anglers may fish local mountain streams, native brook trout creeks, delayed-harvest waters, or the Watauga and South Holston tailwaters.

Fly fishing is available year-round, although spring and fall provide the broadest range of opportunities. Spring brings increasing insect activity and productive float and wade fishing, while fall offers cooler water, renewed stocking, and comfortable weather. Summer favors early starts, tailwater floats, and high-elevation streams. Winter is quieter and generally more technical.

The primary species are brown trout, rainbow trout, and native southern Appalachian brook trout. Anglers may encounter both wild and stocked fish depending on the water selected. Smallmouth bass can also provide an additional summer option on certain rivers. Target species are matched to the season, water conditions, and each guest’s interests.

Yes. Float trips typically target brown and rainbow trout on larger tailwaters such as the Watauga and South Holston Rivers. Wade trips explore stocked rivers, delayed-harvest sections, wild trout streams, and smaller native brook trout creeks. Many itineraries combine both styles. Float availability and river selection depend on flows, dam generation schedules, conditions, and guide availability.

No previous fly-fishing experience is required. Guides can provide instruction in casting, presentation, fly selection, and reading the water, making the program well suited to beginners and skill-building anglers. Fishing equipment, flies, and terminal tackle can be provided, although guests are welcome to bring their own preferred gear.

Each itinerary can be adjusted to the group’s preferred activity level. Float trips generally require less walking than wade fishing, although guests must still be able to enter and exit the boat safely. Wade trips and guided hikes may involve uneven terrain, slippery rocks, or elevation changes. Guests should discuss mobility considerations during the planning process.

A sample four-night package with three full guided days starts at $3,000 for two guests, based on double occupancy. Trips can be customized in length, lodging, activities, and group size, so final pricing varies. A 50% deposit is required to confirm a reservation, with the remaining balance due 60 days before departure.

TST is not based at a single lodge. Guests may stay at Rising on Main in Blowing Rock, Rhode’s Motor Lodge in Boone, The Speckled Trout Outpost in Damascus, or another partner property suited to the group. Lunch is included during full-day guided activities. Breakfasts, dinners, alcoholic beverages, and additional meals are not included.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the most common arrival point and is approximately a two-hour drive from Blowing Rock. A rental vehicle is strongly recommended because airport transfers are not included and guests dine and explore independently outside guided activities. Different airports or routes may be more convenient for itineraries based in Boone or Damascus.

Anglers must carry the appropriate license for every state in which they fish. Requirements vary according to the state, the angler’s age, and the specific water, and additional trout privileges or permits may be required. Once the fishing plan is established, Trident and TST will confirm the necessary licenses and direct guests to the appropriate state purchasing portals.

Yes. The customizable format works particularly well for couples, families, and groups with different interests. Guided hiking can be incorporated directly into the itinerary, with routes selected around each guest’s preferred difficulty and interests.
