Description

The Scientific Anglers Sonar Stillwater 5ft Booby Tip is a short, floating add-on tip built to fine-tune depth control on lakes without changing your whole line. Snap it between your sinking or intermediate stillwater line and leader to lift buoyant flies like boobies and FABs above weedbeds, keep droppers riding clean, and maintain a precise “hover zone” over structure. It’s ideal for lake trout anglers who want fast, repeatable depth management from bank or boat.

Features

5-foot floating lift - A true floating mini-tip that raises your point fly just off the bottom and away from snags. It keeps buoyant patterns working correctly while your main line sinks, so you cover fish tight to weedlines and contours without fouling.

Loop-to-loop convenience - Welded loops on both ends make rigging instant. Add or remove the tip as wind, light, or weed height changes instead of swapping spools, so you stay fishing and keep your flies in the strike zone.

Depth control for the washing-line method - Pair a booby or FAB on the point with nymphs or buzzers on droppers. The tip stabilizes the rig’s angle, helping your droppers track level while the point fly hovers, which boosts consistency and confidence on the countdown.

Short, balanced taper - A gentle front taper turns over multi-fly leaders without hinging at the connection. Present softly in calm conditions, yet retain enough authority to straighten long leaders in a breeze.

Stillwater-ready coating - Built to stay supple with low memory in cool freshwater, it shoots clean on long casts and avoids coiling on chilly mornings common to lake sessions.

Uses

Stillwater trout and the washing-line - Designed for lake techniques that rely on precise vertical positioning: boobies, FABs, foam head streamers, and teams of buzzers or nymphs. Cast, count down your main line, and retrieve with confidence that your point fly is riding safely above the bottom while droppers track at a fixed height. From the bank, it’s excellent for crawling flies over shallow shelves; from the boat, it lets you skim the tops of weedbeds and keep flies clean during slow figure-eight retrieves.

It shines when fish are feeding just off the bottom or suspended over tops of weeds. Think buzzer hatches on calm mornings, sunny post-front afternoons when trout tuck tight to structure, or any time you want the control of a sinking line without the risk of burying your point fly.

Temperature / Conditions

Optimized for cool to cold freshwater typical of trout lakes. The coating remains supple in early-season cold snaps and spring/fall conditions. In hot midsummer heat, expect a slightly softer feel; a brief stretch before fishing helps keep it running straight.

Taper / Weight / Design

This is a 5-foot floating tip with a subtle front taper and level midsection to prevent hinging. It adds lift and presentation control without meaningfully altering the head weight of your main line, making it easy to cast on intermediate through fast-sinking stillwater tapers. The short length provides immediate buoyancy at the fly end while preserving the sinking profile of the connected line.

More Info

  • Best for: Stillwater trout, booby and FAB techniques, washing-line rigs, fishing over weedbeds and shallow shelves
  • Loops: Welded loop at both ends for quick loop-to-loop connections
  • Sinking/Floating: Floating tip (5 ft)

Universal Rules

Match the tip to a sinking or intermediate stillwater line to control fly height without compromising the countdown. Keep connections clean and check loops regularly for wear. Use leader length to fine-tune elevation: shorter for more lift at the point fly, longer for subtler rise. Rinse after use and store loosely coiled to minimize memory.
