Description

The Sage Signal Fly Rod is built for the moment a saltwater day turns on. The tail that breaks a slick flat, the wake of an adolescent permit, your guide suddenly working the push pole with fresh urgency: saltwater fly fishing is a sport of signs, and the rod in your hand decides whether you can act on them. Signal is built around that instant, blending responsive loop control with the kind of tenacious strength and uncomplicated castability that keeps a fish-of-the-day shot from turning into a story about the one you blew.

Sage built this family for anglers moving into salt or pushing into new fisheries and species, where consistent success comes down to controlling the variables you can. It handles short, punchy shots at fast-approaching targets and long, subtle deliveries to meandering migratory tarpon with equal composure, and the 7wt through 12wt range covers bonefish flats through big tarpon and offshore work.

Blank

The Signal is built on Sage's KonneticHD Technology, a graphite layup that places fiber more precisely and densely through the wall of the blank. The practical result is higher line speed with less energy loss, a tighter and more stable loop, and a tip that stops moving quickly after the stroke rather than trailing waves down the line. That recovery is what makes the rod feel ultra-responsive at both ends of the casting range, loading fast enough for a 30 foot shot at a cruising bonefish and carrying enough reserve power to reach a fish at 70. The blank wears a Sea Smoke finish with Blue Dun base wraps and Metallic Aqua trim wraps.

Guides

Stripping Guides - A Fuji ceramic stripping guide takes the abuse of the first contact point, where grit and salt do the most damage to a fly line. The ceramic insert is harder and slicker than a standard chromed frame, so shooting line runs cleaner and the guide does not develop the grooves that shred coating over a season of tropical fishing.

Snake Guides - Oversized hard chromed snakes and tip-top run the length of the blank. The extra diameter matters in salt: it lets knots, loop-to-loop connections and stiff tropical running line clear without hanging up when a fish takes off, and hard chrome resists corrosion better than an uncoated stainless wire.

Reel Seat

The reel seat is corrosion-resistant anodized aluminum in a Bead Blast black finish, which is the correct answer for saltwater. There is no wood or exposed hardware to swell, pit or seize after a week of spray and rinsing. A hook keeper is integrated into the seat rather than bolted onto the blank, so there is nothing to catch your running line as it comes off the deck. The grip is a super grade full-wells cork handle with a cork and EVA fighting butt, which gives you a full hand of leverage during a long fight and a butt that will not crumble the way all-cork does when it grinds against a gunwale.

Rod Tube

The rod ships in a matte black powder coated aluminum tube with gloss black anodized aluminum end caps, and a black rod bag with a titanium logo and a Sea Smoke tag. The powder coat is a functional choice, not just a finish: it takes the scuffs of travel and boat storage without the anodizing wear you get on a bare aluminum tube.

Warranty

Sage backs the Signal with its original owner lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Breakage from normal fishing use is repaired or replaced for a handling fee, and claims run through Far Bank's service department. The warranty does not cover loss, theft or intentional damage, and it applies to the original owner, so keep your receipt and register the rod.

Recommended Lines

The Signal is a half-size-friendly fast rod, so pair it with a tropical taper built to load quickly at short range without collapsing on the long shot. The Rio Elite Bonefish Fly Line is the match for 6wt through 9wt flats work, with a taper that turns over a long leader and a hard tropical coating that will not go limp in the heat. For a one-line answer across bonefish, permit and tarpon on the same skiff, the Scientific Anglers Amplitude Grand Slam Fly Line carries enough mass up front to move a crab pattern into the wind. In the 10wt through 12wt sizes, the Rio Elite Tarpon Fly Line gives you the front-loaded head and stiff core needed for close-range shots at laid-up fish.
