Description
The Redington Rise III Fly Reel was Redington's flagship freshwater reel, and it earned that spot by spending its budget where an angler actually feels it: a fully machined 6061-T6 aluminum frame, an anodized finish and a compact carbon fiber disc drag. Redington has a reputation for affordability, but the Rise III does not reach its price by die casting the frame or falling back on a click drag, which is what a lot of reels in its class do. It is built for the angler who wants one trout reel that can carry a full season, or a backup that will not feel like a downgrade the day the primary reel goes down.
Design
Lightweight Machined Frame - Redington designed the Rise III to be lighter than the Rise reels that came before it, and the porting cut through the frame and spool is where most of that weight went. Removing material on a machined reel is safe in a way it is not on a cast one, because the bar stock retains its rigidity, so the Rise III sheds ounces without gaining flex. Quick Release Spool - a push button release at the center of the spool lets you change spools or clear a jam without tools. Ergonomics - twin molded soft touch handles and an oversized drag knob keep the reel workable with cold or wet hands, and the reel converts between left and right hand retrieve.
Finish
Anodized Aluminum - The machined aluminum is anodized rather than painted, so the protective layer is grown into the surface of the metal instead of sitting on top of it and cannot chip away the way a coating can. That is what keeps the reel presentable after a few seasons of contact with rod tubes, boat gunwales, net frames and streamside rock, and it gives the Rise III corrosion resistance in fresh water and on the occasional saltwater day. The finish also does the practical work of protecting the reel foot and spool rim, which are the two places a trout reel takes the most abuse.
Materials
6061-T6 Aluminum - Frame and spool are CNC machined from 6061-T6 aircraft grade bar stock. Machining a solid billet produces a more rigid part than die casting, which is why a machined reel resists the flexing that lets a spool rub the frame under load, and it is the single biggest reason the Rise III sits above Redington's cast reels. 6061-T6 also takes anodizing cleanly and holds up well to weather and wear, and it keeps the reel light: the 3/4 comes in around 4 ounces.
Drag
Type - The Rise III runs a compact carbon fiber disc drag built to deliver smooth, fish stopping torque without adding bulk to the frame. Redington's own product copy describes it only as a compact carbon fiber drag and does not call it a sealed system, so plan on rinsing and drying the reel after a saltwater or silty day rather than trusting the housing to shrug that off. The oversized drag knob sits proud of the frame, so you can find it and change the setting mid fight without taking your eyes off the fish.
Materials - The stack runs on carbon braking discs, the same material larger reels use, and it is chosen because carbon has very little difference between its static and moving friction. In practice that means the drag starts turning without a lurch when a fish first pulls, which is what protects light tippet. Carbon also handles the heat of a long run better than cork or felt, and unlike cork it does not need to be dressed or lubricated to stay consistent.
Arbor Size
U-Shaped Large Arbor - The Rise III is an ultra large arbor reel with a u-shaped spool profile. The large arbor picks up more line per turn of the handle, which is what you want when a trout runs straight at you and you have to catch up to it, and it stores the line on a wider radius so it comes off the spool with less coil memory. The u-shaped spool takes the guesswork out of where line lands: it feeds toward the center of the spool rather than piling at one edge, so you can play a fish without babysitting the retrieve.
Warranty
Redington Lifetime Original Owner Warranty - Every Redington reel is covered by a lifetime warranty to the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty is limited to repair or replacement of the reel and does not cover direct, indirect, consequential, incidental or any other type of damage. As of August 2026, Far Bank's published repairs pricing states that all repairs on reels not covered by warranty are $50, a flat rate that applies whether the reel is a current model or out of production.
