Description
Kevin Feenstra's Halloween Leech is a premier pattern designed specifically for swinging flies to migratory fish. Created by the renowned Muskegon River guide Kevin Feenstra, this fly has earned a permanent spot in the boxes of serious steelhead anglers across the Great Lakes and beyond. It imitates a large, swimming leech or general baitfish, combining a dark silhouette with aggressive trigger points that provoke strikes from lethargic or pressured fish. The pattern is built to hunt large steelhead and salmon in cold flows where a substantial meal is required to move a fish.
Features
Articulated Shank Construction - This fly is tied on a shank with a trailing hook attached via a sturdy loop. This design allows the fly to swim with a natural, sinuous motion that rigid hooks cannot replicate. Additionally, the trailing hook setup significantly improves hook-up ratios with short-striking fish and reduces the leverage a fish can use to throw the hook during a fight.
High-Contrast Colorway - True to its "Halloween" name, this pattern utilizes a striking combination of black marabou and dark schlappen paired with a vibrant orange head and flash. This high-contrast profile casts a strong silhouette in the water while the bright "hot spot" at the front acts as a target for predatory fish.
Weighted Eyes - Equipped with dumbbell eyes, this leech gets down into the strike zone quickly. The weight also adds a jigging action between strips or during the swing, giving the materials a pulsating life even in slower currents.
Uses
The Swing - This fly is engineered for the "down and across" swing presentation. Cast it across the current, throw a mend to let it sink, and allow the line tension to pull the fly across the run. The current activates the marabou and flash, doing most of the work for you.
Stripping for Aggression - In slower pools or frog water, adding an active strip can trigger reaction bites. The articulated body collapses and expands with every strip, simulating a fleeing food source that larger predators find difficult to ignore.
Conditions / Season
The Halloween Leech excels in the shoulder seasons of late fall and early spring when water temperatures drop. Its dark profile makes it a top choice for stained, tannic, or off-color water where visibility is limited. The orange highlights cut through the gloom, making it visible to fish holding deep in the column.
Profile / Action
This pattern features a broad, breathing profile that pushes water without being overly bulky. The marabou tail and schlappen body create constant undulating movement, while the flashabou wings add a shimmer that mimics the slime coat of a baitfish. It rides hook-point up or neutral depending on the current, minimizing snags on the bottom.
