Description

The Core C1100 is a traditional down-eye dry fly hook built on Ahrex wire and sold through Hareline's Core lineup. It runs 1X wide and 1X fine, which means you get a wider gap for better hook-ups without adding extra weight that would drag your fly under. The bronze finish is paired with a chemically sharpened point and a small barb, so the hook sticks on the set and still pinches down to barbless in a second. Available in sizes 6 through 24, the C1100 covers everything from stonefly dries and hoppers down to midges and tricos, all on one consistent platform.

The slightly down-turned eye is the defining feature here. Many fly tiers prefer down-eye hooks for their looks on classic patterns, and the down-eye style makes tying parachute fly patterns easier because the post sits cleanly behind the eye without crowding the gap. That angled eye also helps your tippet pull slightly downward, which can improve how a dry fly sits in the surface film. If you tie a lot of Adams, Blue Wing Olives, or parachute-style mayfly imitations for trout, this is the hook shape you want in your drawer.

Why We Like It

The C1100 solves a simple problem: you need one dry fly hook model that works from a size 6 Stimulator down to a size 24 Griffith's Gnat, and you don't want to pay Ahrex flagship prices for every hook in the box. This hook was developed in partnership with Ahrex, the leading Scandinavian hook producer, so the wire geometry, tempering, and point quality come from the same design team. The 1X-fine wire keeps the hook light enough to float well with standard hackle and dubbing, while the 1X-wide gap gives you room to actually hook fish, even on bushy-bodied terrestrial patterns. We find the points come out of the box sharper than most bronze hooks at this price, and they hold that edge through a full day of fishing without needing a stone.

The size range is what pushes this hook ahead of a lot of competitors. Running from 6 all the way to 24, you can stock one model and cover caddis pupae, soft hackles, emergers, spinners, and every standard mayfly dry in your box. That kind of versatility keeps your tying bench clean and your hook selection simple.

Comparisons

Core C1100 Dry Fly Down Eye Hooks vs Ahrex FW500 Dry Fly Hooks:

This is an easy comparison because they come from the same factory. The Ahrex FW500 offers a classic design for tying traditional floating patterns with a standard length shank and a down eye. The FW500 has a black nickel finish that reduces glare and looks sharper on the vise, but it also costs more per hook. The C1100 uses a traditional bronze finish that blends in just fine on trout water and comes at a lower price point, which matters when you're burning through 25-packs tying for a full season. Both hooks are chemically sharpened with a small barb, but the FW500 tops out at size 18, while the C1100 goes down to a 24. If you need small dry flies and want Ahrex-level wire at a better price, the C1100 is the move.

Core C1100 Dry Fly Down Eye Hooks vs Daiichi 1100 Wide Gape Dry Fly Hooks:

The model numbers are almost identical, but these are very different hooks. Daiichi's 1100 combines an oversized down-eye with a wide gap and mini barb, and is made in sizes 16 through 24. That oversized eye is a real advantage when you're threading 7X tippet through a size 22 hook on the river, but the Daiichi only starts at size 16, so it's purely a small-fly hook. The Core C1100, by contrast, runs from size 6 all the way to 24 and uses a standard-sized down eye with a 1X-wide gap. If you mostly tie size 16 and smaller, the Daiichi's big eye is a genuine convenience. If you want one hook model for your entire dry fly range, from a size 6 Stimulator to a size 24 midge cluster, the Core C1100 covers far more ground.
