Description

Merging dependability and affordability into one clean line,  Greys' Tail Fly Reel represents a new benchmark in die-cast reel design, with performance that's ready for anything from river-run striped bass to hefty ice out pike. A new addition to the Greys reel family, the Tail combines a sealed carbon disc drag, enclosed frame architecture, and a rapid retrieve large arbor spool into a clean, highly refined platform. With thoughtful engineering and a polished machine-finished construction, the Tail offers smooth drag performance and everyday reliability for freshwater anglers looking for a reel that balances performance, durability, and value.

Design
Enclosed Large Arbor Design –
Greys' Tail Reel features an enclosed frame design that prevents thin fly lines from slipping between the spool and frame. This added convenience is paired with a large arbor spool that increases line pickup speed and improves line management during fast runs. The streamlined industrial frame balances strength with efficiency, and the reel is easily convertible between left- and right-hand retrieve for simple setup.

Finish
Multi-Process Machined Finish –
Constructed from durable die-cast aluminum, the Tail undergoes two separate machining processes to remove excess metal and create a highly finished, refined design. The final result is a clean black and red aesthetic that blends durability with a modern visual appeal.

Materials
Machine-Finished Die-Cast Aluminum Construction –
Greys' Tail reel is built from high-quality die-cast aluminum that is precision machine-finished to improve structural strength and overall durability. This construction method keeps the reel lightweight while maintaining the rigidity needed for consistent freshwater performance..

Drag
Sealed Carbon Disc Drag System –
At the core of the Tail is a sealed carbon fiber disc drag system designed to deliver smooth and dependable resistance throughout the fight. The sealed design helps protect internal components from water, dirt, and debris while maintaining consistent drag performance. With up to 8 pounds of stopping power depending on the model, this drag offers plenty of control for trout, bass, and other freshwater species.

Arbor Size
Large Arbor –
The large arbor spool improves line pickup speed and reduces line memory, helping anglers recover slack quickly and maintain better control during long runs.

Warranty
Greys' Warranty –
As of March 2026, Greys' fly reels are backed by the manufacturer against defects in materials and workmanship for twelve months from the date of purchase. In order to be eligible for this warranty, your reel must be registered with Greys within 60 days of purchase

Greys Tail 5-6 a good value

"The Greys Tail reel is attractive. The drag knob has just over 1. 5 turns from minimum to maximum. The drag knob would be better if it were longer along its axis, but the diameter is fine. The maximum drag strength is more than 5 pounds by my test, more than enough for a smallmouth bass. I was able to put 100 yards of 20-lb Dacron backing on the reel with a Rio Gold WF5F line, but it will probably work better if I use 90 yards of backing. I’ve never got into the backing with the freshwater fish I’ve targeted, so 90 yards will be more than sufficient. The weight of the reel loaded with line and backing nicely balances my 3. 35 oz 5-wt 9-ft rod."
