Mayers Mysis Fly

While most mysis shrimp patterns offer a solid degree of realism, not all of them have that built-in movement that sometimes makes the difference between a good and a bad day. Well, the Mayers Mysis Fly, designed by Landon Mayer, has both—realism and movement that pulses in the water and fools trout on just about any tailwater or water system that mysis shrimp call home. Mysis are small freshwater crustaceans that trout gorge on anywhere they're found. Landon noticed this over a decade ago, and his wheels began turning to come up with an imitation. It didn't take long for him to land on a recipe of clear rubber antennae, a white ostrich herl thorax, and a slim body. Fast forward through those ten years, and Mayers Mysis Fly has remained relatively unchanged and still accounts for some of the heaviest fish of the year.

Mayers Mysis Fly is one of those flies that you can fish all year long. However, this isn't a fly that you can just fish anywhere as it is most effectively fished in water systems that are rich with mysis. Once you've found a waterway packed with mysis, simply fish Mayers Mysis Fly on a tight line, under an indicator, or integrated into a multi-nymph setup, and get ready for the hits.
