How to Choose Gamakatsu Fly Tying Hooks

Saltwater series: pick by strength and shank

Gamakatsu's saltwater fly hooks differ mostly in wire weight and shank length. The SC15 is the standard wide-gap hook; the SC15-2H is the same shape in 2X strong wire, offered in 3/0 and 5/0 for tarpon and billfish. The SL11-3H is a 3X strong Limerick-bend hook with a straight eye for maximum holding power from bonefish through tarpon.

Action: For Surf Candies, smaller Hollow Fleyes, and Game Changers, choose the Gamakatsu SL12S 1X Short Big Game Wide Gap Hooks, which shorten the SL12S shank while keeping the heavy wire and big gap. For classic tarpon flies, the SC17 has a slight up-eye in 1/0 through 3/0.

Trout hooks: curved, jig, and tiny

Best for: Scuds and sowbugs, the C12 Scud hook with its wide gap and curved bend in sizes 10 through 16. The C12U Caddis Pupae bends the shank so the eye sits in line with the point, which Gamakatsu designed to add wiggle to pupae and worm patterns. The Gamakatsu C15BV Vertical Eye Emerger Hooks are the Klinkhammer-style option with a curved shank and vertical eye.

Best for: Jig nymphs, the J20 and J20B, the same 60-degree hook with and without a barb. The R18B is a 2X strong barbless hook on a retainer bend with Gamakatsu's Nano Smooth Coat for low-friction penetration, a strong pick for stoneflies and Pheasant Tails on tough trout. For midges, the C12BM runs down to size 30 with a large eye for easier knots.

Salmon, steelhead, and classic streamers

Best for: Swung flies, the Gamakatsu L11S-3H Hooks, 3X strong with a short shank and straight eye for Boss, Comet, and similar steelhead patterns in a corrosion-resistant NS Black finish. The T10 6H tapered loop-eye hook has the curved shank and up-eye for fully dressed Atlantic salmon flies and Spey patterns.

Avoid if: You need a modern short-shank streamer hook, the S11-4L2H is a traditional 4X long, 2X strong down-eye hook. It is right for Black Ghosts and other classic featherwings, but reach for the B10S when you want a stinger bend and bigger gap.

Why Trident Carries Gamakatsu

Gamakatsu has made hooks in Japan since 1955, and the company describes its process as premium high-carbon steel, precise tempering, and a conical point that is sharp straight out of the pack. The saltwater series has a long track record on tarpon, bonefish, and stripers, and the trout line now covers jigs, scuds, emergers, and size 30 midges.

Materials & Durability

  • High-carbon steel, tempered: Gamakatsu hooks are strong for their wire diameter, which is why the 1X heavy SL12S handles fish that other hooks need 3X wire for. Carbon steel still rusts, so rinse and dry saltwater flies.
  • Tin vs. black finishes: Tin-plated hooks (SC15, SL12S, SC15-2H) are the most corrosion resistant. NS Black (L11S-3H) and black nickel (B10S, SL45) cut glare and resist corrosion but still need a rinse after salt.
  • Barbed vs. barbless: The J20B, R18B, and C12BM are factory barbless. Barbed models like the J20 and C12 pinch down with flat pliers.
  • Point care: A conical chemically sharpened point dulls on rock. Test with a fingernail and touch up with a hone, or retire the hook if the point has rolled.
