Designed by Carl Stouts, the WD-50 is an effective nymph that will imitate anything from tiny mayfly nymphs like BWOs to midge pupae. Modeling itself after the original pattern but adding a couple of twists, the WD-50 has a slim thread body, mallard fiber tail, flashback wingcase (perfect for imitating those freshly emerging nymphs), and a mallard wing bud. A relatively simple design but one that works well in a variety of environments, the WD-50 is a fly that can be fished all year long.
Whether you're matching emerging insects or just bumping the bottom of the stream, the WD-50 proves effective, with sizes 18-20 being the most popular sizes.
