When you need a fast-sinking fly to fool picky bonefish, the Christmas Island Special Bonefish Fly does just the trick. Tied by Randall Kaufmann for prospecting the heavily fished bonefish waters of Christmas Island, the Christmas Special proved itself almost immediately, and though it was designed for Christmas Island, this fly is effective on flats around the world. The Christmas Island Special takes some inspiration from Crazy Charlie, but it utilizes heavier eyes for quick sinking as well as a Krystal Flash tail to add some extra glimmer. Use it as a general attractor when you're not sure what the fish are eating or as a great shrimp and small baitfish imitation. The Christmas Island Special is a good addition to any tropical environment.
Fishing the Christmas Special is pretty straightforward in that you'll want to strip the fly back to you and find what retrieve the fish like best, but its heavy eyes give it an advantage whenever bonefish are in deeper water. Having the ability to get deep can sometimes make or break the day, which is exactly why carrying a few Christmas Specials is always a good idea.
