Blue anodized aluminum Bauer SLT fly reel with silver accents, machined cage spool and ergonomic knob

The Bauer SLT fly reel is Bauer’s new saltwater big game fly reel, ending a nearly 10-year gap in their saltwater reel offerings. The SLT aims to compete with the major players in the saltwater reel game, such as Hatch and Nautilus, combining a powerful sealed drag with durability and comfortable ergonomics. In this review, we’ll discuss the important details of the new Bauer SLT, including its pros and cons, spool design, drag, and price. If you’re in the market for a new saltwater big game fly reel that can handle everything from Bonefish to Tarpon and GTs, this review is for you.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Extremely powerful sealed disc drag
  • Stout and durable
  • User-friendly ergonomic design
  • Made in Twin Bridges, Montana

Cons

  • Heavy for its size
  • Very muted drag sound

Who It’s For

Designed for big game sight-fishing applications in saltwater, the Bauer SLT is ideal for Tarpon, Permit, and GT anglers. Its drag features ample stopping power for these powerful flats species, plus quick line retrieval to make fighting trophy fish more efficient. Its heavier-than-average weight makes it less ideal for all-day blind casting, but it's perfect for sight fishing scenarios where limited shots are the norm.

Weight

At just over 10 ounces in the 7/8/9 size, the Bauer SLT is heavier than many of the premium saltwater reels on the market. For comparison, the Hatch Iconic weighs 8.9 ounces, the Nautilus GTS 5.1 ounces, the Lamson Hyperspeed 6.8 ounces, and the Hardy Fortuna Regent 8.7 ounces. Because of its additional heft, the SLT wouldn’t be my first choice for all-day blind casting pursuits like blitzing Striped Bass or Mahi Mahi. However, it could work for Spey fishing, though the lack of an enclosed cage might cause line slippage with thin running lines.

Drag

The sealed disc drag system on the Bauer SLT is worth bragging about - this thing has the muscle to slow down seriously large fish with authority. We estimate the maximum drag pressure in the 7/8/9 model to be somewhere between 10 and 20 pounds, which is more than you’d ever need for Bonefish, Permit, and even adult Tarpon. At the maximum setting, you’ll likely straighten your hook or break off in most situations.

In addition to its brute strength, the SLT’s drag is very well sealed, meaning you can feel confident taking it into the harshest environments on the globe, from the Seychelles for tenacious GTs to the silty waters of Guyana for giant Arapaima.

Sound

Although the SLT offers a low, resonant tone on the incoming and outgoing directions, it is very muted and soft. A louder drag sound would provide more feedback during hot runs!

Spool & Cage Design

In terms of retrieval performance, the SLT’s spool is right up there with popular saltwater reels like the Hatch Iconic and the Nautilus GTX. It features a maximum spool diameter of 3.8 inches, a width of 1.2 inches, and an arbor diameter of 2.45 inches. These dimensions yield about 9 inches of line pickup per turn, which is solid for its class. As an added bonus for Tarpon anglers, the SLT offers tons of backing capacity, giving you peace of mind when that 100+ lb beast is screaming toward the horizon. If you’re looking for the quickest line pickup you can get, check out the Lamson Hyperspeed, which gives you a whopping 13 inches of pickup per turn.

The SLT’s frame features a highly ported open cage design, with geometry similar to the Lamson Hyperspeed. It’s simple but stout, providing plenty of durability without excessive weight.

Looks & Ergonomics

Bauer didn’t try to get too fancy when designing the appearance of the SLT, but instead focused on beefy engineering that looks stout and clean. We love the simple, highly ported design, which just looks like a capable saltwater reel when you see it in person. Available in fully-anodized blue or black colorways, the SLT is a handsome complement to most saltwater rod blanks.

We’re picky about fly reel ergonomics, but the Bauer SLT truly impressed us. It features a grippy cross-hatched knurl on its large drag knob, making it one of the best drag knobs on the market (right up there with the Sage Enforcer). Its anodized aluminum handle is a comfortable double-flared hourglass shape, making it easy to grab when you need to quickly wind up line. The spool release knob is also cross-hatch knurled and is easy to loosen to quickly change spools on the water. Overall, we’re big fans of the user-friendly ergonomic design of the Bauer SLT.

Value

Price: $895

At $895, the Bauer SLT stands among the most premium fly reels, competing with models like the Hatch Iconic ($815), Abel SDS ($995), and Nautilus CCF-X2 ($640). While many competitors offer similar features—powerful fully sealed drag systems, anodized construction, and meticulous American craftsmanship—the SLT sets itself apart with a design that prioritizes durability and reliability, even if that adds a bit of weight.

Admittedly, the SLT is one of the heavier reels in its class, but many saltwater anglers will see value in its stout design. Its robust construction enhances durability, making it a great choice for harsh saltwater environments like the Seychelles, Christmas Island, and the beaches of Baja. This added weight also creates a stable, balanced feel to counteract tip weight and provide extra confidence during prolonged fights with powerful Tarpon, GTs, or Roosterfish. For those who value longevity and a reel that feels rock-solid in hand, the Bauer SLT is built to deliver.

Conclusion

The Bauer SLT Fly Reel is a rugged, reliable option for saltwater anglers who demand performance and durability in extreme environments. While its added weight may not suit everyone, it reflects a commitment to stout engineering that inspires confidence when targeting the most powerful saltwater flats species on the planet. With a sealed drag system capable of taming adult Tarpon, ergonomic design, and a clean, functional aesthetic, the SLT offers exceptional reliability and longevity. For those who prioritize durability and a rock-solid feel in a premium reel, the Bauer SLT is a worthy investment.
