Although it can be rare to come up with a new streamer that works very well, John Barr has done it with his Slumpbuster Streamer Fly. The history of the Slumpbuster Streamer began whenever John received a package of Pine Squirrel strips. John noticed it had some similarities with Zonker Strips but also noticed that the Pine Squirrel strips were a little more supple, had shorter hair, and possessed a great range of mottled colors. After some tinkering with the new material, the Slumpbuster Streamer was invented and streamer anglers across the world quickly began to see how effective it was in a range of colors and sizes.
The Slumpbuster Streamer works as a great baitfish or crawdad imitation depending on the color you choose, but it’s also one of those streamers that you can just dead drift with success--if you’re feeling really ambitious, use two Slumpbusters just like John. While dead drifting a Slumpbuster is effective, this fly also has some versatility and can be swung across and down, quickly stripped upstream, or even cast into ponds for opportunistic bass. Whether you’re looking to break a streak of bad luck or just want to try another one of Barr’s great patterns, the Slumpbuster is a fly that you’ll be happy you turned to.
