A small fly that packs one heck of a punch, the Griffiths Gnat Dry Fly is one that should be in your box every day of the year. Developed by one of the founding fathers of Trout Unlimited, George Griffith first tied the Griffiths Gnat as a way to imitate a freshly hatched cluster of midges; soon after its creation, the Griffiths Gnat became a staple for pursuing tricky midge hatches all over the world. Although the Griffiths Gnat has a simple look, its ingredients of grizzly hackle palmered over a peacock herl body give great floatability while looking just like a group of midges.
The Griffiths Gnat isn’t so much a fly that you want to search with, however, it’s a great choice whenever midges are hatching and fish are keyed in on them. Midges are an incredibly diverse group of insects, and unlike other aquatic insects, you’ll find them hatching just about any month of the year, even in the dead of winter, and that’s exactly why carrying the Griffiths Gnat in sizes 18-22 is always a good idea. From fooling those trout that seem to be rising to nothing to matching heavy midge hatches in February, you can always turn to the Griffiths Gnat.
