Description

The Redington EDC Fly Rod is the rod you grab when you do not know exactly what the day holds. EDC stands for Every Day Carry, and the premise is a rod that lives in the truck or the travel bag and handles whatever water you end up on, whether you are sending dry flies at rising trout, casting the flats of New England at cocktail blues, or working streamers for strong smallmouth. Every model breaks down into four pieces and rides in a divided tube, so the rod that covers all of that also fits behind a seat or in a checked bag.

What makes it work as a one-rod answer is the blank. Redington builds the EDC on its Nano Resin Graphite technology, the same carbon system it uses at the top of its lineup, brought down to a mid-price rod. The result is a fast action with real backbone for pulling on strong fish and enough feel to keep mending and strike detection sharp. The series runs from 4wt through 8wt in 9ft, 9ft 6in and 10ft lengths, with a saltwater-ready reel seat on every model, so one platform covers spring creek dry fly work, long-leader nymphing and light salt.

Blank

Nano Resin Graphite - The EDC blank uses Redington's Nano Resin Graphite, the company's highest-performance carbon technology. The resin system raises durability and lets the blank keep the backbone needed to turn a strong fish, and it also sharpens feel through the rod, which is what makes casts more precise, mends more efficient and strikes easier to detect. The action is fast, which is the right call on a rod expected to throw a size 18 dry one morning and a weighted streamer into wind the next.

Finish - The EDC wears a muted green that blends into natural landscapes rather than flashing at fish, and it is a look that does not date the rod.

Guides

Stripping Guides - Ceramic-insert stripping guides. Ceramic is harder and slicker than a bare metal frame, so line shoots cleanly and the guide resists the grooving that grit and repeated false casts eventually cut into softer inserts.

Snake Guides - Black chrome snake guides run the length of the blank. They are light, durable and smooth running, and the black chrome finish keeps them subtle against the green blank instead of adding glare.

Reel Seat

Every EDC model gets a saltwater-ready anodized aluminum reel seat with dual uplocking rings. Anodizing is what keeps the seat from corroding after a day in brackish or salt water, and the dual rings are what matter over a long day, since they lock the reel foot down instead of working loose the way a single ring can. Redington machined a hidden hook keeper into the seat, so there is nothing wrapped onto the blank to catch line, and the jam nuts carry exaggerated knurling that stays grippy with cold, wet or fish-slimed hands.

Rod Tube

The rod ships in a rugged high-denier nylon rod tube with built-in dividers, so each of the four sections rides in its own sleeve and the blank never rubs against itself in transit. A nylon tube is lighter and easier to pack than aluminum, which is the right choice for a rod built to travel.

Warranty

Redington covers the EDC with its original owner warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty is limited to replacement of the rod and does not cover direct, indirect, consequential or incidental damage resulting from use, nor misuse, neglect, normal wear, fire, theft, lost rod sections, intentional damage or modification of a finished rod. Far Bank assesses the rod and replaces it in full rather than repairing sections, and there is a service fee: 50 dollars for current models and 95 dollars for discontinued ones, with discontinued rods upgraded to a current model of equal or better performance.

Recommended Lines

A fast blank across this weight range wants a line with enough front mass to load it at real fishing distance without killing a delicate presentation. The Rio Gold Premier Fly Line is the natural all-around trout pairing for the 4wt through 6wt, with a taper that mends well and turns over a dry-dropper rig cleanly. The Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Infinity Fly Line is the other good general-purpose choice, half a size heavy and built for fast rods, which suits an angler who fishes at close and mid range. If the 6wt through 8wt is going to spend its life on streamers or on the salt, the Rio Outbound Short Premier Fly Line carries a short, heavy head that loads the rod fast and moves a big fly with very few false casts.
