Trident Fly Fishing is a full-service fly shop. We spend a lot of time testing gear and writing reviews to give you all of the tools to make your next trip a success. We are not a blog or a review site, and there are no ads. 100% of our funding comes from your gear purchases, so if this review helps with your next fly fishing adventure, please help support us by buying your next fly rod from us.

Winston recently introduced the Air 2 "Reach" series, and their goal is clear: create a lineup of longer trout rods that offer better line control, improved mending, and more efficient drifts, all while maintaining the smooth, soulful action the brand is known for. Available in 10-foot 4, 5, and 6-weight models, these rods are designed for anglers who want extra reach without sacrificing feel. In this review, we put each model through its paces to see how they perform with various fly line pairings, and to find out which situations each rod handles best. If you're looking for a longer rod for technical Trout (and limited Salmon & Steelhead) scenarios, this review is just for you.

10' 4wt

The 10' 4wt is the standout of the Reach series. It feels wonderfully light in hand, tracks smoothly through the stroke, and remains consistent from close range out to about 50 feet. We paired it with the Rio Elite Gold (126gr) and Rio Elite Technical Trout (122gr), and both lines matched the rod's personality quite well. A softer tip allows for gentle presentations, making it an excellent choice for technical tailwaters in the Rocky Mountain West or spring creeks anywhere that reward finesse. That being said, the 1004 is not limited to small flies and extreme delicacy. While I would certainly use this rod for technical dry fly situations, it also has the versatility to handle dry-dropper rigs and light nymph setups with grace. The extra length improves mending, line control, and long drifts while still feeling manageable. For anglers who want a true all-around technical trout rod in the Reach lineup, this is the one to choose.

Lines: Rio Elite Gold, Rio Elite Technical Trout

Best Uses: Technical dry flies, dry-dropper, tailwaters & spring creeks, light nymphing

10' 5wt

The 10' 5wt Air 2 Reach is a deeper-loading rod than its 4wt counterpart. This is a rod that enjoys roll casting and improvised single-hand spey casts with indicator rigs or light versileaders. Overhead casting with a Rio Gold (146gr) felt smooth and accurate within 40 feet, but beyond that I detected a noticeable hinge feel in the middle third of the blank. That's not to say the 1005 is strictly for roll casting, but rather that the rod prefers short to mid-range casts, at least with a Rio Gold or an SA Infinity taper.

I'd pick this rod for drift boat missions on medium-sized rivers like the Madison in Montana or the Roaring Fork in Colorado. Its perfect for making those 30-40 foot casts into riffles and seams from the boat with indicator rigs or dry-droppers. While it wouldn't be my first pick for dedicated dry fly work, the 1005 Air 2 Reach is an accurate nymphing tool that will surely find a home in many drift boats in the coming years.

Lines: SA Amplitude Infinity, Rio Elite Gold

Best Uses: Dry-dropper, light nymphing, drift boat fishing, medium rivers

10' 6wt

The 10' 6wt is the most powerful rod in the Reach lineup. It pairs well with the SA Amplitude Anadro (200gr), which loads the rod deeply and makes for an excellent roll caster. While a little heavy and awkward to overhead cast all day, the extra power makes it ideal for big water, heavier nymph rigs, sinking lines, and possibly even some light steelhead work for anglers in the Pacific Northwest.

This rod feels most at home as a dedicated nymphing tool, but it also performs well for swinging small Atlantic Salmon flies or targeting Grilse. For surface work such as bombers on more intimate salmon rivers, the Rio Elite Gold XP (173gr) is a better match. It loads the rod in close and casts bushy dries more effectively than the Anadro. Overall, this is a versatile big-water trout and light anadromous species rod that covers everything from Western drift boat fishing to technical Atlantic Salmon rivers.

Lines: SA Amplitude Anadro, Rio Elite Gold XP

Best Uses: Indicator nymphing, single-hand swinging, big rivers, sinking lines, light steelhead

Favorite Rod:

Of the three models, the 10' 4wt stood out as my clear favorite. Its light swing weight and overall versatility make it a rod I could easily see becoming a go-to for many trout anglers, especially in places where an extra foot of reach translates to better presentations. It handles everything from technical dry flies to dry-droppers and light nymph rigs with ease, and it maintains a smooth, soulful action that feels distinctly Winston. This rod felt beautiful at all distances and carried that signature balance of finesse and control that Winston is known for.
