Gunmetal Lamson Remix S fly reel with machined aluminum skeletal spool and red drag accent

Today we're reviewing the Lamson Remix S, the latest iteration in Lamson's hybrid machined fly reel series. Like its predecessor, the Remix S features a machined frame with a cast spool and solid performance for its price point. While Lamson did improve some minor details like aesthetics and drag knob size, no significant upgrades were made in this new model. Overall, we were left wondering if the new Remix S is worth its increased price tag, considering its few advantages over the budget-friendly Liquid S. Keep reading to learn why we found the new Remix S to be stuck between a budget reel and a high-performance mid-priced reel.

Weight

The 5+ size Lamson Remix S weighs in at 4.95 ounces, which is slightly heavier than the new Liquid S. This weight increase stems from the Remix's machined frame. While it's not as light as the Liquid, it offers enhanced frame durability. Most probably won't notice the weight difference, but if you're looking for an ultra-lightweight reel, the Remix S falls short compared to other mid-priced reels like the Redington Rise (4.6oz) or the Galvan Brookie (3.2oz), which are both lighter in the 5-weight size.

Drag

The Remix S features Lamson's trusted Conical drag system, a single o-ring sealed drag featuring around 5 pounds of stopping power in the 5+ size. This is plenty of drag for any freshwater fishing situation and is adequate for light saltwater duty. The drag knob allows for two full turns of adjustment, ideal for precise drag pressure settings with minimal fine-tuning.

Sound

The incoming and outgoing sounds of the conical drag are distinct, both offering satisfying 'clicky' sounds reminiscent of vintage trout reels.

Spool & Retrieval Rate

The Lamson Remix S features the same spool as the Liquid S, making them interchangeable. Featuring a max spool diameter of 3.37", a narrow width of 1", and an arbor diameter of 2.3", the spool can hold up to 150 yards of backing with a 5wt fly line. With an 8-inch per turn line pickup rate, this spool's performance aligns with most mid-priced reels on the market.

The only downside of the Remix S' spool design is its cast-aluminum construction, which is more susceptible to scratching or denting if dropped. For comparison, the Lamson Guru S features a fully machined spool and frame for an additional $60.

Looks & Ergonomics

Aesthetically, the Lamson Remix S is a handsome reel, featuring the same sleek design as the new Liquid S. The major difference between the Remix S and its budget-friendly counterpart, however, lies in the drag knob. We loved the cast-built drag knob on the Liquid S due to its size and functionality. Unfortunately, the Remix S' machined drag knob is more difficult to grip, requiring you to forcefully squeeze the knob to maintain traction. The reel handle works fine, offering enough size to be functional. Lamson offers two color options for the Remix S: Smoke and Daybreak, which are both a matte gray metallic color.

Warranty

As of 2026, Lamson offers a lifetime warranty to the original owner with an additional $35 fee.

Price: $239

Conclusion

The Lamson Remix S is stuck in an awkward position between being a fantastic budget reel and a solid-performing mid-priced reel. Although we appreciate the drag and overall aesthetics of the Remix S, it's puzzling why anglers would pay an extra $90 for what is essentially a more durable Liquid S with a less practical drag knob. Consumers are left with the choice of buying the cheaper $149 Liquid S with a $59 spare spool or jumping up to the $299 Lamson Guru S which offers a fully-machined spool and higher performance. With all that being said, the Remix S is still a great reel for the price, and many anglers will appreciate the performance and durability of this new reel from Lamson.
