Materials:

Hook: Gamakatsu J20 (Size 14)

Bead: Hanak Competition Round+ Slotted Tungsten Beads (3mm, Gold)

Thread: Danville 6/0 (Yellow)

Wire: Danville Lead wire (.20) and UTC Ultra Wire (Small, Gold)

Tail: Hareline Mallard Flank (Wood Duck Gold)

Body: Hareline Antron Yarn (Light Brown)

Resin: Loon UV Clear Fly Finish (Flow) and Loon UV Colored Fly Finish (Black)

Step 1

Close-up hand tying sulphur perdigon nymph on vise: dark curved hook wrapped with silver wire and small brass beadhead

Slide a slotted tungsten bead onto the hook and seat it against the eye. Wrap .020 lead wire 3–5 times directly behind the bead, pressing it snugly against the bead to lock it in place and add weight for a faster sink rate.

Step 2

Hand holding vise with Sulphur Perdigon fly: olive-yellow thread body, tinsel ribbing and gold bead head on black hook

Start your thread just behind the lead wire wraps to anchor them. Work the thread over the wraps, filling any gaps between the wire coils to create a smooth, even underbody.

Step 3

Strip a small clump of fine fibers from a Hairline Mallard flank feather directly from the stem. Tie them in at the rear of the hook shank to form the tail.

Step 4

Tie it in just behind the bead, on top of the hook shank, and wrap the thread back to the tail.

Step 6

Wind the Antron Yarn forward with touching wraps, fully covering the thread underbody. Tie it off just behind the bead and trim the excess.

Step 7

Tie it off just behind the bead and trim the excess wire. Finish with 2–3 whip finishes and cut the thread close.

Step 8

Apply a small drop of black UV resin to the top of the hook shank just behind the bead. Keep it controlled — it should not run down the sides.

Tip: A bodkin gives you much more precision than squeezing directly from the bottle. Cure with your UV light to set the hot spot.

Step 9

Apply clear UV resin over the entire abdomen. Use a bodkin to spread it evenly across the surface for a smooth, uniform coat. Cure with your UV light.
