Trident Fly Fishing is a full-service fly shop. We spend a lot of time testing gear and writing reviews to give you all of the tools to make your next trip a success. We are not a blog or a review site. 100% of our funding comes from your gear purchases, so if this blog post helps you on your next fly fishing adventure, please support us by buying your gear from us.

Giving a realistic look in the water, the Medallion Midge is an excellent choice whether you're fishing over picky trout in a limestone system or those freshly stocked fish in the middle of fall. No matter where you're fishing, there's a good chance that midges are present, and there's a better chance that the Medallion Midge will help you hook up.

Recipe

Step One

Bronze hook secured in black vise with thin brown thread wrapped, Medallion Midge fly tying on pale blue background

Begin the pattern by laying a thread base down.

Step Two

Bronze midge hook in vise with brown thread body and white tying thread on pale blue background, medallion midge fly-tying

Tie three inches of white UNI-Thread on top of the shank at the thorax. Be sure to leave the rearward-facing material exposed.

Step Three

Brown medallion midge fly body wrapped with brown thread on gold hook held in vise, white tying thread visible for fly tying

Run the brown UNI-Thread along the shank to help develop the fly's body.

Step Four

Bronze hook in vise holding tied brown Medallion Midge fly with silver ribbing and white thread on pale blue

Wrap the white Uni-Thread along the shank with even spacing up to the thorax. Before moving on to the wing section, tie the material, then snip the excess UNI-Thread.

Step Five

Bronze medallion midge with brown segmented thread body and white parachute wing on hook in a vise

Tie on a strand of the Hairline Clearwing material on both sides of the shank, at the thorax. The wings should run perpendicular to one another, forming a V shape.

Step Six

Beadhead Medallion midge fly with bronze dubbed body, white wing post and fine antennae on hook for fly fishing

Apply a small amount of Ice Dubbing to the thread, then wrap the dubbing in front of the wingcase several times.

Step Seven

Brown medallion midge fly with iridescent thorax and translucent white wing tied on hook in vise — midge fly, fly tying

Pull the wings forward and apply a few wraps in front of the bead. Next, pull the wings rearward and secure the material behind the bead.

Step Eight

Small brown medallion midge fly with ribbed body, gold bead head and white upright wing on hook, fly fishing pattern

The Medallion Midge is ready to hit the water after trimming the wings and hitting a whip finish.
